I wonder what their comments will be to the big miss on the fiscal target and the lack of shipments for the start of Q2? Remaining silent in their current situation is not cute or clever, its probably the silliest thing they can do right now. They should have spoken up weeks ago.

Their target is 4 million,

They have officially sold 3.06 million(by the end December), and unoffically sold another 420k(in january and febuary), so you may have spoke a little too soon.

Those are shipped numbers. Stores are reporting excess stock from the initial shipments that came almost half a year ago. They won't be able to ship any more Wii U's in March or Q2 because people won't place the order since the original stock isn't budging. Besides, let's not forget that the original target was 5.5 million with a likely sellthrough of 5 million expected, this has been shaved to 4 million shipped and a likely 3.5 million sellthrough expected and will still be missed by at least 15-20% with a really poor sellthrough. There was no plan, direction or reason behind this product, that is becoming more and more evident.

I haven't really spoken too soon, I've been saying for months that they would miss this target by a great deal (and that was the original 5.5 million, missing the adjusted one is nothing short of a small crisis). January, february and march sales are simply atrocious and their conservative projection is still way too big, I'm not the one who spoke too soon, the ones who claimed certain success after november and december did though.

Shoot, you found me, I changed my comment hoping you wouldn't see it>.> not because I think it's wrong or whatever, it's simply because I don't feel like arguing about it, and I decided that after I posted it, so I immediately changed it, you must have eyes like a hawk:P

But whatever, the 5.5 million sales was estimated back when pikmin 3, raymon legends and lego city were all launch titles, and the 4 million sales were back when raymon legends was coming out in febuary.  If the wiiU gets within 500k of that estimate, I would be shocked.  Either way, sales will pick up once the rest of the announced games come out, and I would easily bet you my profile pic rights:P that the ps4 and 720 will have similar launch window sales as the wiiU:P

I'll grant you that the Wii U has already been given the middle finger by some developers, Rayman seems like a fairly solid title and losing exclusivity is bad but losing the launch window is worse, they could use some more games. I'll also grant you that the PS4 and 720 won't have amazing launch windows, I think they'll have a better first Q1 though, with perhaps a smaller or somwhat similar debut holiday.

A lot of people are expecting way too much out of either one or all three of the 8th gen consoles.

You nailed it right there

You think a Nintendo Direct will turn things around for Wii U? You do know those millions of people that made the Wii successful aren't going to watch that right? Only the core Nintendo fans. Core gamers aren't the problem, they already have a Wii U. Also the fact that Nintendo has to apologize for game droughts and slow loading times on Wii U is ridiculous. They are in a horrible position and its looking unlikely with each passing day that this year head start will give them any sort of advantage.

Sony and Microsoft need to take notes. Look at how Nintendo launched the Wii U. Do the opposite.

It's still a headstart. Microsoft messed up theirs with the 360 (high price, software droughts, no real must-have titles, unreliable hardware), yet a measly 5.5m units were still good enough to stay ahead of the PS3 for a very long time. A lot of Nintendo's current problems can be fixed before the Nextbox and PS4 launch. Not all of them, but enough to leave the current horrible position behind them.

About two years ago people were quite sure that Sony wouldn't repeat Nintendo's 3DS mistakes with the Vita. I wouldn't count on smooth launches for the Nextbox and PS4.

A headstart is pointless if you're just going to let the other guys catch up to you. Microsofts mistake didn't matter since Sony repeated their mistake as well with a poor launch line-up and higher price.

indeed, Dreamcast got a headstart and was overthrown by the PS2 even tho it had a larger library of games

The Dreamcast was discontinued because Sega ran out of money. They were 2 billion in debt when they lauched the console.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to get a Nintendo Direct this Friday. They like Fridays, and with GDC going on it would be interesting timing.

Won't they wait until at least Monday, the first day of Q2, if they are sitting this quarter out?

Nintendo has to stop announcing games and start giving solid release dates and releasing games. ASAP. It's a crime what they are doing to Pikmin 3. Not only is it not released yet, but it hasn't even got a release date!

This. It's bad enough that Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 aren't out already; that we don't even have release dates is unforgiveable.

Going by both Metacritic and Gamfaqs, we know the release dates of a colossal SEVEN upcoming Wii U games in NA. Six for PAL. Five in Japan.

No wonder people think the console has no games and no future when they look at the date list and see such a pitifully small selection.

This BS has to end. Nintendo needs to stop being so bloody closed-mouthed and  give us something to look forward to.

I don't think so. I think they'll want to pre-empt their financial report like they did last time. It won't affect March sales; there's nothing they can do to dramatically impact Wii U sales the day after their ND -- and even if they could, that's not what the upcoming ND will be about.

What I expect is a bunch of release date announcements, maybe a third-party or eShop game revealed, but mostly release info, and maybe some new footage of upcoming games. In particular, they'll give us a release date for the April firmware update that will improve loading times and add the actual Virtual Console.

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, but they are not sharing their WiiU plans it seems. I'll still stand by my prediction until next monday (2 weeks since I made it) and if they don't open their mouths I will board the doom train and will never get down.

They have had 2 Nintendo Directs since I made this thread, both 3DS centric (a downloadable software one and one for Tomodachi Collection)
It's in their plans to show us what's coming up and how they plan to release it, but I suppose they are leaving WiiU for the later date, so that it will remain freshly on people's heads. I wish we get something substantial, not vague crap.

Well we've got the end of financial year investor's meeting on the 24th April so expect news then at the latest.

I admit I was wrong. I thought Nintendo had taken seriously that wake up call. It seems they didn't and nothing that has happened since I made this thread is leading me to believe otherwise.

I now believe they are in deep trouble and they have no serious plan on how to overcome this. I was waiting for at least some Japanese announcements from 3rd parties, but they aren't coming. Nintendo would have been all over them if they were indeed bringing games. Nintendo will suffer from worse support than Wii did. I can't believe they decided to release a console without a properly planned schedule, or games at all.

Good luck Iwata.

Of course they are aware. Investors and gamers are aware of it too.
