Just out of curiousity, how much of the actual federal budget goes helping out "poor people"? I'd bet its actually probably not all that much of the actual pie. They're an easy target obviously. I also read something that showed in actuality the US debt has risen with every administration going back to the start of the 20th century. The truth is there isn't any crazy rush to do anything about because who is going to allow the US to "fail"? China? LOL. The US is the text book definition of "too big to fail", the global economy could never allow the US market to fail as such I honestly don't think it's debt really means all that much. There is no global economy without the US. Period. That's not a statement rooted as bragging, but more of a practical fact (for better or worse).

It'd take a fairly complex breakdown... however i'd guess you were wrong just on the face of it.

A lot of Social Security, and Medicare go to the poor... all of Medicaid, and Chip does, and "Saftey Net" programs mostly/to all do as well depending on your definition of poor whether it be assets or income.
Defense has grown in 2012 it's worth noting, used that graphic though because it actually breaks things down a bit more... otherwise stuff happens like Medicaid and CHIP getting put in healthcare when it's also welfare. Still missing some other stuff like pell grants. Housing stuff etc, but they're smaller so...

Not that it matters whether it's a lot or a little. Just wish it would be spent smarter... a lot of how we do welfare is just... uneven, not effective and often counterproductive.
Like how foodstamps can be used to buy anything from Soda and Candy Bars (clearly not healthy and shouldn't be allowed) to Lobster and prime choice steak. (Which is then usually sold for a discounted price for money to be used for other stuff.)
