Forums - Nintendo - Is there a misconception regarding the age range of Nintendo gamers?

I clearly said the people I have come across who play Nintendo are adults, I also asked what other people think! So they could give there opinion on people they know.

"Look, I'm not having an argument with you, if your a teenager and are not supporting yourself you are still a child, a lot more teenagers "children" play playstation and xbox,"

This bit isn't really you saying what you've seen, but just you stating facts.

If you want to go against something that's brought upon by people's perceptions of a large group you don't just get a big group of adults together to say "oh well the thirty of us are adults who play Nintendo games and obviously we're statistically significant". That means literally nothing.

And then you supplant that notion that kids play Nintendo with your own that teens are more drawn to the other consoles based off the exact same amount of "evidence" that the original thing you're going against was made with.

Nintendo is for all ages. The "kiddy" stigma is usually propagated by people who are afraid to be seen as childish/weak themselves. Personally I'm not too interested in most Nintendo franchises though.

Not true, Nintendo has had the lunch box kiddie image since sega joined the gaming industry. Sega became the cool console because they weren't as restricted by Nintendo as per the content that was playable of even visible on their console. It became the teen/arcade gamer friendly console with the darker paint job. Read up any history of Nintendo book or video, Sega knew themselves that Nintendo had a child and family friendly image to uphold and banked on the market that revolted against that in the 90's in the "attitude era" and used it to their advantage to gain ground in an era when Nintendo had third parties under serious lockdown because of exclusive chips in their system and marketshare. When the Playstation came along gaming was legitmized and was no longer seen as a toy. Nintendo is and always seen the gaming industry as nothing but a toy and thats why it stayed where it was. Today games are hailed as higher level electronics capable of pushing gaming and even PC gaming has to wait until the next console cycle to play the majority of their top multiplats. There was a time when PC gamers looked down on console game consoles for not having anything that was pushing gaming, but eventually it came back and reared its ugly head. Times have changed, but Nintendos image has not.

Sega commercials vs Nintendo in the 90's:

The famous "Genesis does what Nintendon't" commercial:

Gamers grew up and are there are some who love Nintendo regardless and that is fine, but Nintendo is and will always aim towards a certain market. Nintendo is at its weakest when it goes for the core gamer and even they know that has never been their sweet spot. Again, no one is saying it cant make those games but it wont win them a gen. They never marketed themselves a company to push things that far so by the ends they went this gen, so to shall they meet the same sales of older more "core" Nintendo consoles that Nintendo strives to reach the commercial level of attention for. If the Wii U doesn't get its issues streat it needs be ready to see a Wii U 2 in three to four more years after this. Microsoft and Sony know where they fit in and Microsoft is trying to expand while marketing themselves as the battleground for the multiplayer hardcore gamer. Sony  expands without holding itself to any labels and Nintendo fell into a trap. I think its time they get themselves out of it before Miyamoto eats his words. I wonder what Miyamotos words are for parents who let their kids play the majority of multiplats on the 360 and PS3? I doubt you would like to hear his words. He and the rest of the Nintendo big wigs are old school and know where content should be directed. Nintendo knows half the COD's that well come from little kids whose parents in America and Europe have very little control over their gaming habits.

My remedy for Nintendos problems? Keep the core games but bundle free apologetic wiimotes with the Wii U and drop the price with Wii Sports Resort HD.

By the way...market research states that Nintendo has the broadest range of gamers during the Wii era and a larger amount of females gaming than any other console, nearly being 50/50 ratio with males. The average gamer consists of 30's to 40's males  and games on either a PS3 or 360 but is no exempt from owning a Wii as they might be enthusiasts themselves.

You're coming off as a little condescending. Legally, yes, under 18s are still children, but when referring to more specific age groups, people usually differentiate "teenagers" from "kids" (once again, you said kids, not children). It seems like you're just trying to group them back together to push your agenda. Even if you group 19 year olds in with kids, I'd still have to disagree with you, I personally know far less adults who play Wii than PS360, especially if they're not parents.

I guess we just know very different types of people.

There are more or less two types of Nintendo fans.

1. The traditional Nintendo fan who began with the NES/Gameboy/SNES, and primarily games on handhelds, but will buy consoles if they release proper software.

2. The Nintendo fans whose first console was the Gamecube.

Many people from group 1 skilled the Gamecube because it was very alienating. Nintendo had begun alienating fans heavily during the N64 era. Although still had many of the sorts of 2D games and RPGs on Gameboy and GBA that fans from group 1 liked, so most of group 1 bought only Nintendo handhelds for a while.

Most of the people in Group 2 were children, and the Gamecube was their first console. While the Wii and DS attracted many from group 1, it alienated many from group 2. The big problem with Group 2 is that Gamecube was much more like a Playstation for younger audiences rather than a traditional Nintendo aimed console. Group 2 would be much better off as Playstation fans,

Try going on a field trip with a 2 grade class and see what games those 7 - 8 year old's talk about. That's right, those hardcore motherfuckers are all trying to one up each other with how badass they are at Halo or God of War.

As you get older you will see teenagers as kids, eventually you will even see under 25's as kids, it's all relative

When you have a life behind you spanning decades, the antics of teens and young adults will be put into proper perspective

You wont believe me now, but I know you will one day, everything makes sense when you can look back with hindsight ;)

I have always known that most Nintendo gamers are older as the games sell on nostalgia more than anything else, thus it has to be older people buying them.

I'm an older gamer and I'm a playstation fan, even though I grew up on the nes and the super nitendo.

The gamecube and the Wii (mostly the Wii) pretty much are to blame for this problem. The Wii honestly made nintendo fans look like a bunch of 8 year old in the eyes of casual gamers, if that makes sense. Basically, with all of the sholveware and kid/family friendly, most people did not see the actual hardcore games that were released on the Wii and there were quite a few. Oddly enough, they sold like crap (MadWorld, Conduit, Xenoblade, The last Story, Red Steel, etc) That's my honest opinion and I own a black Wii which I bought exclusively for Xenoblade and the last Story.
