I was reading another thread, and people seem to have broken various systems in one way or another. A lot of people have had a RRoD or YLoD on their 360/PS3, but I just want to know how reliable have older systems been.

Please mention all the systems you've owned (broken or not) and explain how they broke and after how long you had them. I want to get an idea of how reliable consoles actually are.

For me:

I've owned NES, GB, SNES, Super Gameboy, Genesis, Sega CD, PS1, N64, GB Pocket, GBC, Dreamcast, GBA, PS2, GCN, GB Player, DS, PSP, 360, PS3, Wii.

Out of those I've only had Sony and Microsoft Products break, and never a Nintendo or Sega product.

My PS1 broke because the ball bearing responsible for spinning the disk came loose and flew out everywhere. They wouldn't stay when put back in. This broke 5 years after I owned the system (Replaced with a PS2)

MY PS2 broke when the laser started to go out of allignment. After 6 years, it would only play some games (like Front Mission 4), and after 8 years it stopped working alltogether. By this point I already owned a PS3, but I still replaced my PS2 last year (11 years after I bought my original PS2).

My PS3 YLoD'd, I bought it in 2008, and I had it for 3 years I think.

All Sony's were first gen system though.

4 Xbox360's got the RRoD for no reason.

PS1 Stopped reading discs after i peed on it when i was a kid

GBC, NES, DS, Wii, PSone, Gamecube, PS2 and Spectrum ZX (yeah).

Zero failures.

- Red ringed 360 (pro model circa 2008)
- Another red ringed 360 (the new slim model)
- The replacement 360 I got (slim model) was dead on arrival...had to send it back in
- My PS1 broke...no idea the reasoning
- My PSP broke but was my fault (physical damage)

Of all the systems I've owned, only the NES gave me trouble. It technically wasn't broken, but after a few years of ownership, it would sometimes take a 20 minute ritual of blowing into the cartridge, and playing with the Power and Reset buttons to get a game to properly start.

My SNES, GB, N64, GC, PS2, and PS3 never broke.
Two of my 360s needed to be replaced because of those damn red rings. My Wii can't read dual layered discs.

Bally Astrocade - still works (Before I was born!)
Atari 7600 - Still works (Ditto!)
NES - Still works (Launch)
Gameboy - Still Works (dunno)
SNES - Still Works (Launch)
N64 - Still Works (Launch)
Playstation 1 - Still works (Launch)
Gamecube - First Christmas, broke the week of Christmas. After sent back... worked until I gave it away, current status unknown.
Playstation 2 - Broke, Disc drive error (Launch)
Playstation 2, 2 - Broke, Disc drive again... (Replacement for the first.)
Xbox 360 - Still works! (Actually the RROD model too.)
PS3 - Still works (20 GB launch Model
Wii - Still works.

PSP - Charger port bent so it won't charge right... or something, someone fixed it for me.

3DS - Works... but i just got it recently, almost got broke when my girlfriend dropped it in some water.

Own almost every major console since the 3rd gen, only had a PS2 break on me, the power light was just stuck on red.

I also had the YLOD on my PS3 for about an hour, before it fixed itself. A 3 hour run on Uncharted 3, 30 degrees Celsius in my room and the fact that I was blocking the fans didn't do the system any good.

PS1 stopped reading discs
Dreamcast, went through 2 because of faulty controller ports, another stopped reading discs, and I uh.. killed another one trying to mod it to play Japanese Sega GT and Marvel vs Capcom. (got it right on the next one though, wooooo)
360, went through 3 I think due to RROD

Only one I had to pay for was the PSone and that one, it was cheaper/easier to just go buy a new one.

Most durable console I have ever owned has to be the Sega Genesis. When I was in middle school I came home one day to find my baby brother had poured sand and sticks into the cartridge slot. I took it outside and poured it out... booted up fine. 5-6 years later it was still kicking, I went on a 2 week camping trip and brought it along for some NHL action. One night it flooded and the Genesis was submerged in water for over an hour. I left it out in the sun and let it dry for a day and slapped NBA Jam in and it powered on and worked fine. It's still in my closet and would work if I unboxed it today.

My Megadrive randomly stopped working one day a few years back, and in the same week my N64 gave me the BSOD. Was a tough week that. These are the only 2 consoles i have had give up on me, apart from some disc reading errors with my Wii (just had it cleaned and it worked fine again).

I know alot of people who have had multiple RROD with their 360, and my brothers PS3 Phat broke, so he bought a slimline model.
