Lol I see what you did there.

Wait. This is serious? Um ..

From my perspective, Nintendo needs either a change in leadership or a new management philosophy. If you have only the same people designing games for 20+ years, you're going to lack variety, which is what has happened. You're still going to make great games, that won't have changed, but they will follow established tastes.

They need to do more of what they've started to do, which is to mirror what Sony has done with Worldwide Studios, and work with promising and innovative third-party studios on new, exclusive IPs, with the possibility of purchasing that studio if things work out. I think that would be a great way to expand on the appeal of Nintendo consoles.

The other option would be to hire new blood, guys from other studios with impressive resumes. We're always hearing about how much money Nintendo has, so that would be the perfect way to use some of it. They could wrap up someone like that and give them their own internal team.

However, none of this is rocket science. That's how the rest of the industry works. Honesty, I think the success of the Wii made Nintendo management complacent and perhaps a bit arrogant. They figured they could throw a new twist on the hardware, keep making new versions of the same games, and the audience would still flock. Variety is the spice of gaming, though. They'll keep gamers with tastes that correspond perfectly with what they're doing, but they won't pick up very many new ones.

Nintendo, like Microsoft is doing now, could have their pick of the litter with developers. Only time will tell if they really are serious about drawing in new customers.

"Nintendo needs either a change in leadership or a new management philosophy."

never change successful philosophy

"but they will follow established tastes"

I'm glad they never did this, if they did this and follow established tastes, then the crash of '83 was their end.

"which is to mirror what Sony"

Sony and their creation of new IP is nothing but desperate attempt to find something successful, mirroring Sony is great way to bankruptcy, nothing more or less.

Nintendo succeeded in both as creator of modern video game industry on one hand and as a creator of their own niche, the day they became follower of established tastes or mirror of someone (let alone Sony) is exactly the day of their end.

I don't understand why some people think Xenoblade is a new IP. The Xeno series has been around for a long time, you'd think nobody has ever played Xenogears or Xenosaga. Just changing setting and/or combat system isn't enough to call it a new IP. Under that logic half the mainline and nearly all the side Final Fantasy games would be "new IP".

Change setting and combat system is absolutely enough to call it a new IP. You are confusing IP with Genre.

Intelligent Systems made Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. Each of those has different setting and similar but distinct combat system. They are the same Genre, but not the same IP.

You probably don't understand the legal concept of Intellectual Property for game series. It's the same reason why, say, Square Enix couldn't go and develop a Fire Emblem game. It's a set, named and copyrighted series that is the property of Nintendo in this case, and they have exclusive rights to its production. It doesn't matter if SE turned it into a first person shooter set on Pluto, they can't call it Fire Emblem or even hint that it's a part of the series. That is, at least without explicit permission from the owner, but let's not get into licensing.

The Xeno intellectual property was held by Monolith and now that Nintendo bought Monolith, it was transferred to and belongs to Nintendo. Hence they are able to use the Xeno name. But that does not spawn a new copyright. But that also means nobody else can make a Xeno game or a game that suggests that it is a part of that series.

There are many great things you can say about Nintendo, but there are also areas where they absolutely deserve to be criticized. One of these things is the creation of new core IPs. The last one they made was Pikmin over a decade ago. That is unacceptable.

Xenoblade Chronicles is undoubtedly one of the best third party games that was released on the Wii. It offers a vast world, formidable gameplay and a good story. It was even praised as the best JRPG of the seventh generation. If third parties can step up to provide such fantastic new experiences as Xenoblade Chronicles and to a lesser extent The Last Story, then I don't see why Nintendo should get a free pass. We should expect more than the usual Mario, Zelda and Metroid games. New IPs that rank right up there in terms of quality with the aforementioned games.

Will Nintendo ever make a new core IP as great as Xenoblade Chronicles or is this a hopeless cause?

You are failing right from the get go. Nintendo owns monolith soft so that was a new ip right there. And pushmo and other games they have been releasing on eshop. Stop the ignorance. New ip has come and more is on the way. You just ignore it.

You know, outside of Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland, this list does very little to help your argument.  Do you honestly consider Wii Play or Art Style to be "new core IP"?

Also, Hamtaro?  Really?

Now that I have read furher into the Xeno- series. I will have to disagree.

Xenogears was made by Square, while Xenosaga was made by Namco. During the time of Gears, Monolith did not exist. However, when Saga came out it was made by Monolith, but under the power of Namco. Blade was made during the power of Nintendo.

and about that "core" thing I find it ridiculous.
