SMB3 & SM64 are so old, and from such different gaming markets I don't even know why you have brought them up. When games are looking to show human emotions, why do you think people still want basic platformers?

Why do you assume that everyone wants the same thing out of games that you do?

It's just the market. When you have billions of people, yet selling only a few million games, clearly they want something else.

Wii was in a similar situation, though. 360 had a one-year head start, and Wii released at a $250 price point alongside a much more powerful machine (PS3). Surely enough people saw enough value in the Wii to justify paying $250 as it remains the top-selling system worldwide by more than 20+ million in system sales. It was merely a slightly-advanced GameCube with a wand controller, and yet it beat both 360 and PS3 despite releasing one year after 360 and being nearly impossible to compare tech-wise to either 360 or PS3.

I'm not sure this article takes into account any previous situations in which certain consoles release a year early or a year late, and how the sales pan out compared to their current-generation counterparts. At lot of the points made don't seem to acknowledge similar things that have happened in the past.

You seem to not acknowledge that motion controls were huge, the Wii gimmick worked the Wii U gimmick is not. Nintendo dreamcasted itself.

There is a big drop from SMG to SMG2. Why is this? Normally sequels of successful games sell more, not considerably less.

Mario Kart Wii sold because it was able to sell on the gimmick of motion controls perfectly. However everyone I knew quickly broke out the gamecube ads once they realised the motion controls were to laggy and digital. So how will the WIiU version sell? What will its main feature be? The same goes for Wii Fit. It sold on the gimmick and a bunch of fat, bored housewives wanting to do something. This is why all gimmick based games sell well eg. Kinetc Adventures etc.

So what new marketing angle does the WIiU have? What will it allow games to do that people haven't seen before? Or, will the games just sell due to the franchise power Nintnedo has?

I didn't bring them up, they had already been brought up.

It seems as if Nintendo's sequels never does as well as the first installment - just look at Zelda...

Since Nintendo didn't do something people haven't seen this time around I'm assuming it'll sell way less than Wii

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

So you're saying people want something other than God of War, Heavy Rain, LIttleBigPlanet, Uncharted, as well. That's a bold point of view.

Games like LBP will always have a place as super casual solo or party games, but things like GoW, Uncharted etc will slowly disappear and Heavy Rain style games will replace them. Yes, a bold claim, but I base this on what has happend with all media. As the Quantic Dream guy said at the PS4 conference, games can now mature to the level of seeing emotions, and this is essentially the move film went from black and white to technicolour. We will progress from Attack of the 50 foot woman to The Godfather, and this will of course cause the target audience to dramatically increase in size.

I think games can be fun without having amazing graphics.  While I love the more modern games that I can play on my PS3 vs. my Wii, I still enjoy playing some games with very simple graphics.  Some of the games that I have burned hours playing on the iPad are literally have visible pixels.  It's about the creative game play experience.

Yes and no. Some games don't need graphics, others need it to help with the immersion, and others need the power to supply the advanced game mechanics. However I will confidently say that the best games will have very good graphics (and yes, I'm still waiting for them to be released).

And why would something sell now which sold well years ago?

Oh wait, it might not. Gaming progresses, and will Mario etc keep up? From the looks of ti, no, it won't.

Yeah you're right dude. Call of Duty hasn't been selling millions of copies per game for over a decade. Neither has Halo. Neither has Grand Theft Auto. Neither has Gears of War. Neither has God of War. Neither has Pokemon. Neither has Monster Hunter. Or Final Fantsy. Or Dragon's Quest. Or FIFA. Or Madden. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

You're right, you TOTALLY can't go off of history and historic trends to judge how a series will "keep up".

And comparing gaming to film? Saying "Going from Attack of the 50 Foot Woman to The Godfather"..........REALLY? Do you just not have any sense whatsoever for film history, or are you trolling? Some of the greatest films ever made, to this day, meaning best acting, best writing, best cinematography, film score, you name it, are from the "black and white era". The only valid point to be made in comparing the two mediums, is that gaming is certainly following a parallel path as film is, in the sense that they're both becoming a LOT more about graphics and flash instead of actual gameplay and substance. If Heavy Rain is the future of gaming, as you say, then it is a bleak future indeed. Have fun with your overpriced console and your playable film Quick-Time-Events. Me? I'm just fine playing actual video games.

Seeing that many of those games have only been around for one generation or have started to flop, no, you can't *rollseyes*

Wii U should be fine even with the ps4 and Xbox 720 depending on how they are both priced. I'm pretty sure both are going to be at least $400, making the wii u the least in cost, but also significantly weaker then the other two based on specs. Wii U definitely needs more games to sell consoles. First and third party would help a lot. Since Nintendo is lacking in third party support though, it'll probably be their first party to increase sales.

Lol i actually think PS4 is in the worst position for next holiday, due to strong PS3 sales

Exactly.  PS3 is just now beginning to hit it's stride.  It was very much a late bloomer, and sales in the west, particularly Europe, as well as some emerging markets, seem to be giving PS3 a second life after US and Japanese sales have begun to cool off.

PS3 might very well be the first Sony console to actually justify the "ten-year lifecycle" slogan.

Didn't the PS2 have a 12+ years on the market? PS3 won't be the first.
