I was talking in the long run... If the PS4 is launched with a $349 price tag it would be seriously competitive, and if you add all the 3rd party games it'll have that Wii U WON'T have... It becomes quite clear that Wii U will be another N64/GC for Nintendo (I'm guessing 40m units sold in total - or there about)

Even if that wound up being true, it's not like that would be a bad thing. They only sold 20 something million units of the Gamecube and still made profit that gen. 40 Million, while far short of the Wii's near-100 million benchmark, would still be a triumph for them. Bear in mind that I honestly don't think the PS4 or Nextbox will wind up selling as much as their predeccesors did either. It's just a sign of the times, the economy was much better in the early years of those systems than it is right now.

And I'm not so sure Wii U will sell that "badly" anyway. Also, again, I don't think Wii U will be missing out on AS many multi-plat titles as it did with Wii. With Wii, the hardware was enough behind the PS360 that while it was still developers being lazy (considering they downported games to DS and PSP just fine), there was some wiggle room for justicfication. But with Wii U, while it would certainly be the "weakest" hardware-wise, it won't be the same gap, and with Wii U's GPU especially, it should stay competitive, and if Wii U is a cheaper console (and more inexpesnsive to develop on), I really don't see much holding it back from getting a lot more multi-plat titles this time round. Just saying.

The question is though, if the multiplats would be gimped, as were the case with the Wii... PS4 is quite the substantial leap over Wii U, and this has to effect porting games somewhat... I've heard that engines will be extremely scalable, so as long as it's worthwhile for devs to port games I think they will, since dev costs will rise this gen - but I guess it all depends on how much it'll cost to port and how much the games will sell...

While the GC did bring in some profits, Nintendo survived thanks due to their handhelds during the early 2000's. I think that it was Hiroshi (former president of Nintendo) that said that the DS would either take them to heaven or to hell (or something along those lines). This view really helps explain what a situation Nintendo was in back then. But then again, they had just left the N64 behind them - which didn't sell like hot cakes either. So the question is if the handheld market will be able to sustain them in the future as well...

You are way too pessimistic, Danne! :D

In terms of price, look at the calculated price made by neogaf. That alone goes from 350-410, i think, and it doesn`t even have the price of the eye toy and the new controller. Assuming that all would go for 450 than you have to add all the other expenses. When you do that the price for a PS4 will go really high - not PS3 high, though.
You say that PS4 could go for 350 to be competitive and i`ll give you two reasons why it won`t. If they could take so severe losses, why not do that with Vita a year ago or extend the price drop outside Japan? When you tout you have a great piece of hardware and you market it for 350 you are sending mix messages. People perceive high tech equipments as costly and at 350 you would be sending the market the wrong message. Just look at the iPhone and iPads. Why do you think their price is so high? How do you think they have huge profits?

In terms of 3rd party, Wii U may not get all games, it might get the inferior versions but that all remains to be seen.
PS4 and X720 will make costs go higher for making games. Do you think that every developer, for every game will bet right away on making games based on those consoles when the fanbase isn`t there and can`t absorv costs? Most titles for one or two years will probably be developed using PS3/X360/Wii U engines and then ported to PS4 and X720.
That means that 5 consoles will get the same game for one or two years. Who do you think has more to gain and to lose from this situation?

The only reason why 3rd parties will leave Wii U is if games don`t sell. So far it may seem that Wii U is failing, but the real test will come once 3rd party games start arriving Wii U at the same time as other consoles and Nintendo comes out with 1st party games.
Because, so far you have late ports and 2 1st party titles. And one of them, despite being great, is a mini game game.

How could Wii U succeed now?

Cheebee pretty much said what I was going to say. lol

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

The WiiU is dead due to poor marketing and no real market position,
This combined with the competition smartphones are having on handhelds, Nintendo might have to use that throne of cash to start some seriously needed R&D.

nintendo is in trouble this hoilday. i really like the wii u i hope it dont fail.

Nintendo is going to compete with fading seventh generation consoles and overly expensive eighth generation consoles with limited software this holiday season. It's not an insurmountable challenge to sell a $299 system (including a game) with blockbuster releases.

The bigger question is how will Sony and Microsoft be able to prevent a post-launch slump for their consoles while Nintendo can look back on a full year of games for the Wii U.

Sony and MS have these things called third parties that make games for them, so they don't go through months and months of no games.

I am aware of third parties, but they didn't exactly help the 360 and PS3 in their respective initial year. What makes you think that this new generation will have third parties come out with all guns blazing?

You can bet that every major publisher has a next gen game in the works, possibly cross gen. Add in first parties that have been preparing for these launches (as opposed to nintendo who had to bail out the 3ds instead of preparing for wiiU) and you are gonna have a big launch window for these consoles. Games likely won't dry up until the summer of 2014 and it won't be anything like the post launch drought wiiU is going through.

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

Its obvious that the whole industry wants Nintendo out of bussines, theyre pushing for that, but they cant achieve what they want cause N is too strong.

wrong thread oops...

I'm sorry but you've got to be joking. Wii is hardly "dead", considering by the end of March it will easily have at the very least, 4 million sold, and that's in a fraction of the time it took the "amazing" Vita to get there. Look what happened with 3DS. It had a VERY slow start, but then Mario and Mario Kart and Ocarina of Time came out, and bam, sales were fine. The price drop certainly HELPED, but I think sales would have picked up with those games anyway. The drought doesn't help Wii U at all, but that drought is ending in March. A superior version of Need for Speed, Monster Hunter 3 HD with a console bundle to boot, and Lego City Stories. MH and Lego games alone always sell a lot, and these being home console exclusive (meaning not on other home consoles), will really help. Which makes it all the more idiotic that Ubi didn't just release Rayman as a timed exclusive, with NOTHING else coming out in Feb., and people highly anticipating Legends, it would have sold well. Plus other games are dropping in March like The Walking Dead, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, etc.

But regardless, the rest of the spring holds much of the same, with Wii Fit U coming, Game & Wario, both big selling franchises, Resident Evil: Revelations coming in May, Wonderful 101 by May/June most likely, Injustice: Gods Among Us in April, Pikmin 3 supposed to drop in late spring or summer, etc.

And considering the fact that games like Dragon Quest X (exclusive), Watch Dogs, the next Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed IV, the next Battlefield, Bayonetta 2 (exclusive), Shin Megami Tensai x Fire Emblem, Project CARS, undoubtedly the next CoD game, etc. are coming down the road, not to mention Nintendo's own 1st party titles, I hardly think they're "dead", by any stretch of the imagination. And to suggest that mobile phone/tablet games are eating into the portable market THAT much is kind of silly. People don't buy phones or tablets for games. They just happen to download games on them, most of which they play in few-minutes-at-a-time bursts. People who want GAMING on the go still buy portable consoles. 3DS is doing fine, and Vita would do better if it would actually get some better games.

The Wii selling 4 million? Erm, at what time are you talking about as it will not have sold that much this quarter and its sales are crashing.

The 3DS sold due to the price drop. You claim it was the games but have no proof. Either way, the price drop has killed their profit margin by 80% http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2011/07/29/nintendo-cuts-3ds-price-by-80-cuts-profit-forecast-by-80/ . So as it stands, Nintnedo are making little profit. Yes, they have the capital to hold on and make new products, but this will be a lost generation for them. Ouch,

The drought will end with multiplatofrm games? Ha, no. I think not. Why not play it on the consoles people already own that run the game better?

Wii Fit was a bored housewives game, and they have clearly not bought the WiiU and won't as their Wii will be gathering dust and they probably don't even know what the WiiU is. Again, the muliplatform games never help console launch sales. Only exclusive games do that, which begs the question; where it the new Zelda? New Metroid etc?

And guess what is also down the road? Nextbox and PS4. As time progresses, so does the market and you ignore this. People will buy for Christmas these consoles or a smartphone/tablet, not the WiiU hence its poor sales.

But most gamers are broke and this is the issue. Many gamers here complain about their console not lasting 10 years (I won’t point out why that is such an absurd comment to make) because they are broke. If Sony or Microsoft target the mid 20 year old + gamer like Sony did with the PS2, then they are onto a cash cow. The WiiU however has targeted...well I don't know who they have targeted. Casual gamers? Hardcore? Mums? It's all a bit confused hence the low sales.

Now I know you won't like what I have said, but reality is like that. If you can find some sources from Forbes etc to back up your claims then that's great, if not, then you have to ask yourself why do you hold such an unsubstantiated opinion?
