Very informative chartz!
PS4 compared to PS2 would be interesting, but probably there ain't enough PS2 data.

we had ps2 data at one point but vgcz has since locked that data away in their archives. the oldest accessible data is ds and psp.
but i agree,.. that would have been a fun comparision.

The PS4 is going to be the only system to outpace its predecessor, all thanks to cannibalizing Microsoft's console. Still though, I don't expect PS4+One combined to beat PS3+360 combined in lifetime sales. Sony's gain over last gen will be small, Microsoft's decline from last gen will be steep. |
Who is going to have a more steep decline in lifetime sales? Microsoft or Nintendo?
It's interesting to see 3DS over 10 million units ahead of PSP at the same point in time. I still doubt 3ds will ever reach 80m considering were probably going to see it's successor in 2015.
Predictions for LT console sales:
PS4: 120M
XB1: 70M
WiiU: 14M
3DS: 60M
Vita: 13M

the thing i can't help but notice is the strong regional dependence. growth in the US, even for now in europe, down significantly in japan. it is obvious that much of these new consoles featues ( hdmi in, game streaming and the share button, ect.) are very western focused. would seem to me more effort is needed in the other markets to cater to their needs.
What I see here as a trend. The USA is keeping this gen alive for the consoles and selling better to this point then last gen. Europe is buying consoles at a similar rate then last gen maybe a little slower. Japan seems to be to busy watching perverted anime to be buying any games at all. I cannot wait to see this holidays results because I think this gen can do better then the last for consoles if the USA sales remain strong and Europe buys more X1s and PS4s. Come on Europe keep up with USA!
No comment on handhelds yet.

Oh man, you have done an amazing work with this! It shows a general decline, with some high points (mostly PS4 compared to PS3). Very well done.
