do you think nintendo only made the WiiU gamepad because they couldnt come up with a better idea?

I don't think that's fair. It's a great idea that could work really well and from what WiiU owners are saying it does. My only beef is the size of that controller! The tech needs updating fast to make that thing ALoT smaller. It actually scares me in a way!

You think the Wii U would have sold better with a standard dual analog controller?

i really dont know, too many variables like price, games at launch and marketing would effect. its not about the sales though. im saying that nintendo tried to make something new and fresh like the Wii remote with the WiiU, but couldnt and just went with the touch screen because they thought of nothing better. im actually gonna put that last part in the OP so people dont understand me wrong

Making a new controller with dual analog and all of the necessary buttons was a direct response to all the customer requests that their console have a universal controller that every owner of the system has.  That way the system can have the same games as PS3/360 without needing to re-develop games with IR and motion functionality.

In other words, they deliberately decided to NOT make some crazy, futuristic controller so that they could increase the chances of getting solid third-party support.  As well as win back so many of the hardcore gamer segment that they lost after the Wii.

@bolded. so your saying they decided not to do the thing that made the wii so succesful? i know its kinda off topic my question. but i do agree that nintendo strategy when it comes to third parties, target audince and even price point do effect nintendo's decision to make the controller

I say definitely not

I read back when the Wii was first released in 2006 that Nintendo always wanted a screen in their controller. They apparently thought about it while making the GC's successor but found that it would be too expensive. They then discovered motion controls and the Wii was born.

In 2007 while thinking of what to do with the Wii's successor, they went back to the screen concept which is now more cost-efficient. Wii U is now born. Nintendo does this a lot actually. They think of ideas and don't use them because of cost issues and come back to it later.

that could be it, i remember that was the case with 3D and the 3DS. but that kind off supports my point. they were looking at the screen in controller thing after the gamecube but went with motion controlls as it is the better idea. and now they went back with that old idea because they couldnt come up with anything else

Lol, I know you winked at the end of your post, but that's not what he was saying at all. They went with it because it was more feasible at the time (apparently).

The BuShA owns all!

No, I'm pretty sure Nintendo has been planning this meticulously for a long time and saw/sees a lot of promise in a touch-screen controller. Ever since the dreamcast days this has been in the minds of people in the industry, a pipe-dream of sorts that became a reality. Sad state of the industry is that, when it came, it was just another lame idea.

That's what needs to be thrown out honestly. The touch-controller is, honestly (my honest opinion), an excellent addition to the world of gaming. Smartglass is nothing besides the U's controller, which can be held during gameplay all the while holding the traditional controller. To me it's just a no-brainer.

If they had a better idea, they would've gone with that one, or it was not feasible.

I and others have suggested this long ago. In fact Nintendo already come up with this idea in 2004 for the Wii but discarded it because
A) They wanted to get away from the dual analog controller because they felt (correctly) it seperated them from a large part of the marketplace
B) It would make their home console too much like the handheld
C) They got their hands on the wiimote technology.

So it wasn't even a new idea. It was a reused, rejected idea.

I think they would have been better going with a modified and improved wiimote that was more like a 1/2 dual analog but still familiar enough for the Wii crowd and still allowed full motion gaming. A small touch screen or pad could have been incorporated.
or
Even a pro controller. This would put them back to GC status but they could have made a much more powerful (truly next-gen) system. As is, the cost of the gamepad is inflating the price causing them to have to keep the tech low. And the price is still too high.

I think they had other ideas but this was a good idea. Maybe time will show I wasn't but I dunno on paper I think it's good.

I'm surprised to see a Wii U praise thread for once.

this is neither prais or doom about the WiiU, its about nintendo and their idea's and what they are trying to achieve with the WiiU :)

Pardon me - I'm in a funny mood today. I'm making the impliaction that if Wii U is Nintendo's best idea, then it represents the best way forward for Nintendo hardware. A positive sentiment, while capable of accepting criticism of Nintendo's approach to other factors such as game quality/quanity and marketing.

i added the wink for you not to think im trolling or arguing with you, just actually having a discussion i dont think it was more feasible at the time, i mean they did add the touch screen to the DS after all. i think they realized what they could do with motion controlls. and its apperant in the games. right off the bat the Wii had zelda and wii sports. both these games showed off what nintendo can do with the WiiMote. WiiU has nintendo land, from what i hear its good. but its no Wii sports. Wii sports was ground breaking when it came to showing off the gameplay potential of the Wii. but now people are still saying they are waiting for nintendo to come up with the game that blows them away and shows what the gamepad can do
