No, I'm pretty sure Nintendo has been planning this meticulously for a long time and saw/sees a lot of promise in a touch-screen controller. Ever since the dreamcast days this has been in the minds of people in the industry, a pipe-dream of sorts that became a reality. Sad state of the industry is that, when it came, it was just another lame idea.
That's what needs to be thrown out honestly. The touch-controller is, honestly (my honest opinion), an excellent addition to the world of gaming. Smartglass is nothing besides the U's controller, which can be held during gameplay all the while holding the traditional controller. To me it's just a no-brainer.
