I say definitely not

I read back when the Wii was first released in 2006 that Nintendo always wanted a screen in their controller. They apparently thought about it while making the GC's successor but found that it would be too expensive. They then discovered motion controls and the Wii was born.

In 2007 while thinking of what to do with the Wii's successor, they went back to the screen concept which is now more cost-efficient. Wii U is now born. Nintendo does this a lot actually. They think of ideas and don't use them because of cost issues and come back to it later.

that could be it, i remember that was the case with 3D and the 3DS. but that kind off supports my point. they were looking at the screen in controller thing after the gamecube but went with motion controlls as it is the better idea. and now they went back with that old idea because they couldnt come up with anything else

I wouldn't say the wii mote was better. Just more cost efficient as a touch screen controller would have been far too expensive in 2006. Personally, I love it and can't wai to see what the next console controller will be like. What I see is the controller having a processer of its own taking the load off the console allowing multiple controllers uses per console. Imagne six people on the same console each having their own screen.

They haven't really shown anything that uses it in a way that really benefits gameplay, so I will say yes, they have no idea what they are doing.

ZombiU is the only game that uses the gamepad well.

honestly this is one of the reasons i asked this. and ZombiU is a third party game the idea's in it are not even their own

i think people are taking me to literally when i said slap a touch screen to a controller, maybe i should edit that lol. and let me put it this way, Wii blew everyone away from the start with Wii sports. lets be honest WiiU didnt, it feels like they are still trying to figure out how to make interesting idea's with the gamepad and thats what im trying to say, they didnt come up with a new compelling idea like the WiiMote so they went with an old existing one (like another user pointed out) and try to make the best out of it

@Bold: I do agree with this part of your post. With Wii, it was extremely easy to understand what was so cool or fun about it. Just by watching other people play it made you admiddiently understand. Wii Sports was a great game that showcased the concept in a very simple way. It made you say "can I try it?" when watching someone else do it. Grandparents and young kids instantly understood the concept and it just automatically worked. With Wii U, it is much more difficult to understand. I don't have a Wii U but watching videos and stuff, you can't instinintly understand its appeal. I think Nintendo knew exactly what it wanted to do with the Wii U, and that was to move away from the T.V as much as possible while still being a Home Console. As I said, I read that the whole Gamepad concept was being considered for Wii. I think Nintendo knows the amount of potential a home system with a 2nd screen has. The problem is that they don't exactly know how to sell people on its concept quite yet. I think Wii Fit U & Wii Party U both have a lot of potential in terms of selling the concept IMO.

@Under-line: I don't agree with this part. I think the Gamepad was fully looked into and they never tried to re-create the Wiimote. Instead, I look at it as the Gamepad is what Nintendo originally wanted the Wii to be.

by better idea i mean a better idea that would sell the console. and as recent sales of the WiiU have shown it is.

Yeah, it's definitely odd.

With the Wii, they had Super Mario Galaxy right about a year after. It used the Wii remote very well, but didn't feel gimmicky.

Also Wii sports was at launch.

With the Wii U it's like: "Um... you can play games on the gamepad, but it will look a lot worse....we don't know.."

Ubisoft was able to make ZombiU, and they used the gamepad well, but honestly, I don't see what uses the gamepad has other than inventory management. :/

How can you say that they haven't used the pad in a way to benefit gameplay than say Zombi U uses it in a way to benefit gameplay? But I disagree. They are other examples of it being used in other ways to benefit gameplay.

I guess it is no coincidence that they made a tablett controller after Apple made tabletts popular as nintendo knew that they can't sell a new console that is only slightly more powerful than the 6 year older ones from msony. They needed something to make wii u look special and new-and that was a new controller, just like they did with wii.
Maybe the new controller would have been a toilet brush if apple would have made toiletbrushes popular.

wait the iphone isnt a toiletbrush?

well, not really. As I know the iphone is that kind of stuff a toiletbrush is needed for.But as i've heard there is a toiletbrush app that can turn your iphone into a toiletbrush.

Nuh uh. Obviously, if Nintendo came up with a worse idea, they would have went with that.

Derp.

I LOVE ICELAND!

it would be really cool if you found that article or video you watched about the how they wanted to do the gamepad idea a long time ago, its not that i dont believe you or anything its just that i really like reading articles or watching videos like that

at the second part, i dont think we can really fully know what happened with nintendo when developing the WiiU because usually that kind of information stays secret within the company. i just feel that nintendo did try to create that same feeling that users had when seeing the Wii, the "can i try it" feeling you said with the WiiU. that feeling sold the system and i dont think nintendo would want to turn away from that. i feel they tried to create stuff but couldnt come up with anything that gave u that feeling like the Wii did, so they just went with the gamepad that which turns out they always wanted to make and try to appeal to the casuals by making it tablet like like the ipad which is something it appeals to casuals
