I guess it is no coincidence that they made a tablett controller after Apple made tabletts popular as nintendo knew that they can't sell a new console that is only slightly more powerful than the 6 year older ones from msony. They needed something to make wii u look special and new-and that was a new controller, just like they did with wii.
Maybe the new controller would have been a toilet brush if apple would have made toiletbrushes popular.

The tablet basically turns the console into a giant DS.

If anything Nintendo's trended towards a uniform format on both their handheld and console divisions, which is part of the reason why they merged them together.

Prepare to see 3DS/WiiU multiplat games.

Because tablets are popular was my guess.

I say definitely not

I read back when the Wii was first released in 2006 that Nintendo always wanted a screen in their controller. They apparently thought about it while making the GC's successor but found that it would be too expensive. They then discovered motion controls and the Wii was born.

In 2007 while thinking of what to do with the Wii's successor, they went back to the screen concept which is now more cost-efficient. Wii U is now born. Nintendo does this a lot actually. They think of ideas and don't use them because of cost issues and come back to it later.

source?

that would be awesome if that's true... so wii u has been planned long time ago?

I read it a while ago and can't find the source. (I know it sounds suspicious but I'm not making it up)

They were looking into the Gamepad a while ago around the same time DS released. They thought it would be too expensive and never used it until now. I could be wrong about the details but I do remember reading about it

This is correct, although I don't recall cost being an issue.  They didn't want the Wii to be a home DS and they wanted to broaden their audience. They realized the dual analog controller was the biggest deterent to getting new people to play.  Thus the wiimote was born.

I can't find a source, but I've read this repeatedly from Nintendo's and other reliable sources.

As I have always stated since the wiiU was first revealed in 2011 I think the gamepad was a bad idea and nintendo have done nothing to convince me otherwise to this day. They should have just gone with a "wii 2" with enhanced motion controls and better graphics.

wait the iphone isnt a toiletbrush?

It is interesting you say this, as I had this feeling for quite some time. I  reckon Nintendo & Co have had the idea of a "dual screen in 3D" concept for quite some time and have been evolving it in different models. Hence after Virtual boy which was the original thema came the DS, the 3DS and now the WiiU. The Wii was completely original as a concept.

I have a feeling that they may have reached their limits in innovation, since that original idea has maxed out. Of course the Gamepad coincided with the rise of a tablet as a device following us around at home.

News Flash: The only reason anyone does anything is because they didn't have a better (feasible) idea.

Or they would do the better idea.

So this thread is basically saying absolutely nothing.

This sounds like something The1 would say.

interesting, i forgot about the merger for a second. but that happened so recently, WiiU has been in development for a long time before that. that seems more of a result and reaction to the recent financial losses nintendo had. anyways do you think the merger was a good idea? or prefer the two divisions to be seperated?

And then we might have ended up with two consoles having toilet brush for controllers after sony copied them.
