At this time everyone is deveoping new engines for the next-generation to take advantage of newer tecnology while also cutting costs. If he is willing to sell UE4 by promising a cost increse "only" by a double, then it means he thinks a "x2" cost rise is already an attractive result for developers.

God, they are saying 5X to 6X? Looking that way 2X looks ok to me too. But, anyway, I wouldn't thrust both of these numbers, since they are interested in selling ther engines, it can be just a way to spread FUD to sell more licenses. Crytek is other that wouldn't be confiable when talking about this...

With the average dev cost of AAA games being between $20m-$40m, 2x doesn't look too good...

Oc course not. I'm sayng that if your options are 5X to 6X or 2X, 2X is a blessing. But, as I said above, 2X is a number from Epic, a engine maker that wants to sell their product, so it isn't very confiable.

This will depend on the ambition of the studio. Those going after cutting edge visuals will see a larger increase, I have little doubt of that. For those that are comfortable lower on the scale, the engines themselves are going to do a lot of the work. I wouldn't expect a Borderlands 3 level release to jumps as much in cost as a Halo 5 level release, for example.

Assuming next-gen consoles are coming and some of us think they are, Take-Two will have extraordinary offerings when it comes,” - agent confirmed as launch tittle for ps4

Damn you for reminding me of that game! Hmmm maybe they agreed to make it a PS4 game instead of a PS3 game...I hope so

why? i was so sure that you will buy another "next gen" console like wii u or nextbox and not ps4

btw talking about that, i think it's quite funny that we all talk so much about the consoles and their different specs when in the end, 90% of vgc user already know which next gen console or consoles they will buy lol. some specs won't change anything for 90%.

Costs shouldn't go up because of more sophisticated graphics. Bad management and poor planning is what leads to higher budgets. Art assets are already created in high res, then downgraded to fit into console machines. Costs shouldn't go up cause they already make high end models and that's not gonna change.

If they're trying to sell their engine, wouldn't they aim lower? I mean, wouldn't it benefit them more to say, "If you use UE4, your development costs will decrease from this gen"?

I guess that's not realistic. So why not say, "your development costs will stay the same"? Is that also not realistic? Maybe the truth is that dev costs will triple even with UE4.

Just saying that if they're exaggerating to make their product sound more attractive, they would be exaggerating up for dev costs without UE4, and down for dev costs with it.
