Forums - Gaming - Is Kinect 2 going to kill Nintendo's chances this coming generation?

Potentially, since Nintendo seems to have lost the plot with casual gamers, though Nintendo has time to recover on that front.

Microsoft still needs to prove that they care about developing quality casual software.

That will be tough to prove since they don't.

Kinect 2 doesn't need to compete with WiiU - WiiU is a non-contender. Kinect 2 (and the other stuff MS is rumoured to have in the works) will be every important in fighting the tablet market. Offering a compelling experience that tablets will never have - period. (opposed to experiences that tablets half-ass but half-ass for next to nothing -ie: Call of Duty, sports) and to distinquish itself from PS4.

720 with Kinect + multimedia will be a lot easier sell to the wife/gf or parents than PS4 or even WiiU.

High chance of Kinect 2 (or the next Xbox in general) will be more appealing in the west than the Wii-U but who knows anything could happen.

More appealing than something that struggles to outsell the Playstation Vita? Surely you jest.

Not being a full supporter of either format, it does point ot Sony winning by a long way this time IF they get the right price at launch

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

People make the mistake of thinking that Kinect was/is competing directly with the Wii. There is some overlap but largely a different market. Wii's success wasn't just "casuals," but also current Nintendo fans, old Nintendo fans that parted ways with them during the N64/Gamecube era, and old school/lapsed gamers in general.

No.

How can you compete with something that's trying to make itself irrelevant?

Hrm. I just had a thought. All of the big 3 might have different focal points on their systems.

Microsoft = handsfree gameplay
Nintendo = tablet gameplay
Sony = controller gameplay.

The only issue with Sony focusing on the controller is that of course Microsoft and Nintendo aren't going to give up on controller based gameplay.

I really want to know what Sony and Microsoft are up to because this next generation could be interesting to see what will happen.

Sony has the Move, I doubt they are just going to give up on it next gen. It was somewhat of a success this gen.

Well... we don't even know if there will be a Kinect 2, so...

Any how, I don't think so. Nintendo is Nintendo.
