Forums - Gaming - Is Kinect 2 going to kill Nintendo's chances this coming generation?

iPhone/iPad IMO has already stolen most of this market.

Here's the tough pill that Nintendo and even MS are probably going to have to swallow -- "casual gamers" don't value video games the same way core gamers do.

They want games that are $1-$20.

Video games are a distraction for them, not something they want to spend $50-$60 a pop on.

Nintendo shocked all of us with their motion controller last gen, and got the sales to show for it. It wasn't until 2010 that MS answered with Kinect, but by then it was already "too late" in the sense that they had no way of catching up with the Wii. This time however, Nintendo are leaving the casual side open right from the start. Will MS swoop in to gather up the casuals with Kinect 2.0?

Motion control isn't what casual is about.  What casual about is is being accessible so people can jump in and play immediately, have a good time, and get engaged.  If one presumes that motion control is THE way to do it, they miss the boat.

Games are ideally what you do with the equipment you have, when you have a spare moment.  It isn't something you do with equipment you go out and buy for the sake of buying.  And the price point is what the market can bear pretty much, due to how competitive it is.

Gonna have 2 wait and see what kinect 2 can do first.

Personally the next gen will be the last for consoles as we know it. Cheap games will kill the market and consoles will become obsolete and overtook by tablets

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

The dualshock/sixaxis has motion controls too. Not many people know about it though.

That's because no one used it... like at all.

People make the mistake of thinking that Kinect was/is competing directly with the Wii. There is some overlap but largely a different market. Wii's success wasn't just "casuals," but also current Nintendo fans, old Nintendo fans that parted ways with them during the N64/Gamecube era, and old school/lapsed gamers in general.

Let's not kid ourselves. Nintendo fans buy Nintendo consoles usually, but the casuals are the difference between Gamecube and Wii (mostly).

So you're saying that the casuals are a bigger buying market than the hardcore?

Let's begin with changes to Kinect 2.  Kinect 2 will offer a much improved tracking through a real-time, time-of-flight active imagine system rather than the passive IR system the current Kinect uses.  The major advantage of this is the fact that Kinect 2 will be able to track with significantly greater accuracy in all light levels.

Another significant improvement will be in the use of Kinect 2 to identify the user.  Not only in providing user identification when logging into the console, but the ability to identify and log in users when playing multi-player games, and Skype.  Skype will be a major feature with the next Xbox, providing the ability to carry on multiple conversations, as well as receive phone calls, or video calls.  Users of Windows and Windows Phone will be able to transfer a call from the Xbox to their tablet, laptop, PC, or smartphone.

Finally, one of the features that will likely go unnoticed is the improvements Microsoft has made to the voice recognition.  Not only will Kinect 2 offer better voice recognition but it'll be able to deal with variations of dialects without having to record each and every language variation.

With those changes in mind, and likely more, Microsoft's focus with Kinect 2 won't simply be games but to improve upon the interactive capabilities between the user and the console.  As I mentioned, one of the big pushes with Kinect 2 will be Skype, and the ability to use the Xbox console as a telecommunications device, not simply a communications device.

Overall the interaction with Kinect with the user interface will significantly improve with Kinect 2.

As far as gaming goes, there are a few tricks that Microsoft will be offering up its sleeves.  Microsoft isn't giving up on gaming with Kinect but improving on it.  Without knowing every possible/probable improvement, Kinect 2 will feature, it would be difficult to suggest how developers will use it that differs significantly from this generation.  Most of the game types currently available this generation will exist next generation, but will offer better tracking fidelity.  Hopefully there will be something new though that comes to fruition.

Just to be clear, I don't think we've seen the full capabilities of the technology Kinect, but I do think the game types that we've seen so far will be about it for Kinect 2.

I own the Wii U & 360 w/Kinect (and PS3 and etc....). I can tell you, any causal players that have come over tire of the Kinect games quickly and seem to always love the party feel of the casual Wii games.  While Nintendoland isn't Wii Sports, it's a great amount of fun when you have several people playing.  Kinect games are geared more for one or two people and  not the casual crowd too much.  Nintendo has always had the family friendly/kid friendly/casual games.

Stop hating and start playing.
