Nintendo will cut the price of the Wii U when the last of the 30cent VC game promotions ends. Think of it as a rolling ambassador program. Personally I think they need to cut the price sooner.

Wasn't the 30cent thing just a 30-day trial rental?

Oh really, it's a rental?  Well, I guess that's one less reason to buy a Wii U.

Uh...pretty sure you keep them. Each title is available to DL for 30 days.

I thought it was ambiguous in the Nintendo Direct.

It's call the "30 day trial campaign"

They said "after the 30 days you will be able to purchase it at the normal eshop price".

That's all the evidence I have though.

The problem is that the Wii U isn't even clearly better than the PS3/Xbox 360 and the 3DS is the clear winner in a shrinking market. So the market where they cannot lose is getting smaller and the market where they face their toughest direct completion they probably won't be able to compete with Orbis and Durango.

Tease.

I dont' think so.

Its a "trial virtual console" service since the service isn't out yet. The games are .30 and will remain your game, but the sale price for that game only last 30days.

EDIT: Tomatito beat me to it.

OK that's why.

Fine print on bottom of page tomatito linked... You can see here you get to keep the game. Just the special price goes away.

* After specified promotional period, each game will be made available in the Nintendo eShop at regular price. Wii U owners who have purchased the game(s) during the promotional period will not need to purchase the game(s) again at the regular price. Games purchased during this promotional period are eligible for 2 points in the Deluxe Digital Program. Point value subject to change.

Sometimes Nintendo reads like a closed book (...Spanish saying but I think it's the same in English???).
And this Trial Campaign is one of them, something that should have been easily explained left everyone confused.

Tbh Wii U is £50 too expensive on both SKU's.

Might be true but when you compare it to the PS3 or 360 its quite cheap. IT IS more powerful has newer tech is energy efficient and it has a tablet!  It also has a "complete" Wii inside that allows you to play Wii games. So you get 2 consoles!  PS3 and 360 dont have that.

I mean a 360 is not even worth what? 100 maybe?.  They constantly sell 360 consoles for 100 euros in Germany (without a LOSS!) I bought a core edition 3 years ago for 99 euros. and a slim 4GB for 111 euros 2 years ago.   A PS3 should be around 150 euros MAX (the extra 50 for the bluray player thats included)

The HDD price is not of much relevance since HDDs are cheap plus WiiU has some sort of SSD inside (even if its small).

So all in all when you see how overpriced PS3 or 360 are  WiiU is not really expensive.

Price cut now wont do jack shit except even more losses in Q4. I guess analysts want that so they can scream doom again.

Nintendo should cut the price in April, when the games start to release. Right now, we have to sit it out.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Okay, so that clears things up.  Back to my original prediction that after the last of the 30cent specials the price of the Wii U will be lowered since this whole VC thing is kind of like an ambassador program for early buyers.

Lol. Hasn't even been out half a year. It'll be fine.

Exactly. Way less than half a year.

About 2 months and 1/2 (73 days) in USA. 2 months (61 days) in Europe. Less than 2 months (53 days) in Japan.

And it looks like 3 million Wii Us have already been sold worldwide. So... not too bad.

Especially when you consider the fact that people are only buying one game (two, but the other is bundled everywhere but Japan, where it's selling way less).

73 days US, 61 days EU, 53 days JP. More than 3 million units sold, 1 appealing game (the people have spoken).

Let's wait until more games come. Because we all know they will come and they will be from multi-million selling franchises.

price cut? Its not doing good cuz of 3 reasons!

One its not known to the general public (the name doesn't help)
TWO no software is out, It sucks but its the truth!
THREE ps3 and Xbox360 have way cheaper price tag with a 7 year library! When next gen comes then talk, Only thing that needs a massive price cut is Vita

we have a winner ladies and gentlemen

btw VGC hella undertracked the Wii U as this was SOLD NUMBERS AT THE END OF 2012   with ~3.1 mil units compared to VGC's 2.5mil 01/19!!! That's a huge margin that needs to be corrected!!!!  http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/46284/wii-u-sales-3-million/

Wii U hasn't done all that well past three weeks, so if nintendo said 3.06mil units sold by dec 31st then i would put wii u (week ending jan 26) at around 3.18mil!

I would put it at ~3.3-3.4 myself (going with the famitsu charts etc) but that's not the point it's still undertracked by nearly a million...shame on VGC!!!

It's shipped.  You've been on this site so long, you should know this.  If anything, the Wii U is overtracked from the numbers we've gotten from Media Create/NPD/Chart-Track.

I sometimes hate the vanity people exude in this site sometiimes. Poeple who tell you what you should or should not know is just a prime example of an overbloated ego.  Anyways, VGC undertracked this since they have the Wii U selling only 2.5 mil date ending 01/19/13 compared to Nintendo's numbers of 3.1 mil sold!!! I still stand by 3.3-3.4 mil sold for date ending 01/26/13 since even VGC has the numbers selling ~225K (not a bad number huh?) in the 3 weeks of January.  I fully expect the system to rebound and sell around ~50-60K the final week of Jan2013.  But hey I'm no Patcher.
