Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is silent for a reason

It's obvious that Nintendo is holding its cards close to its proverbial chest. The fact that we don't have a clue what Nintendo might be releasing for this coming holiday season demonstrates this. And I don't think anyone thinks that Nintendo doesn't have a very good reason for staying quiet.

That said, I disagree with all the people who keep saying "Nintendo is now aiming for the core gamer with the Wii U". Their approach hasn't changed. What has changed is their efforts to get third-parties onto the system - they're putting far more effort into it than in previous generations. Nintendo seems to be taking the approach of "We'll keep releasing the same sort of variety that we've always done, but bring in third parties to fill in the gaps that we usually have trouble with".

Which isn't to say that Nintendo isn't making games for the core. They made games for the core on the Wii, too. The split is right about the same as it was back then, too, if not slightly in favour of the more pick-up-and-play titles with the Wii U.

I can truly only partially agree with that.

Remember how in the early Wii days Nintendo was not making any core 1st party games (bar the cube port that was TP and the expected Prime3). Now, we're getting Pikmin. That's clearly a core game, it's geared towards gamers in its design and level of quality.

I think you're right, that Nintendo are actively seeking the 3rd parties to fill the gap, but that doesn't negate the fact that they are actively after the core, much more than they were last gen. Of course they are still after the casuals (Nintendoland, duh), but they are now more intentful in getting the core. And Pikmin is yet one example, getting 3rd parties is another manifestation of that goal.

So, yeah, we'll see both delivered in surprise soon I hope/believe: 3rd party core games, and Nintendo core games in higher number.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo has ace's up their sleeves and they have the money to make it happen unlike Sony. The Wii U will be a sucess. They will make sure it is, just like they did with the 3DS.

With that said, they should be more open with their plans so people can feel more hyped and motivated to buy the system.

Why did you have to bring up Sony. What did we do to you ?

Err... because they are in the same situation (actually worse) with the Vita and they cant do anything about it?

Mark my words the Vita will be discontinued next year if the PS4 doesn't do well.

I think if the PS4 doesnt do well, Sony will get discontinued the folowing year... but lets leave the doomsday predictions aside and focus on the present. :)

I think Nintendo got afraid to hype the games in advance - like they did with 3DS (Luigi`s Mansion, Kid Icarus, for example).
In 2007, Nintendo released some big games for Wii: Mario Party 8, Wii Fit, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Super Paper Mario, Mario Strikers Charged and Metroid Prime 3.

So far, the biggest titles are Pikmin 3 and Lego City. Here`s hoping the next Nintendo Direct announces some big titles like Splinter Cell and GTA V.

Let`s see what Nintendo has in store for this year. But given it will have to compete with one or two new consoles, it will need some big titles.

I think that what they need is exclusives. I dont think anyone buys a Wii U for the multi-platform titles if they already have a 360 or PS3.

with every console they introduce something revolutionary we just have to wait a little longer :*(

Nintendo has many games in development close to release. They are not announcing anything because they need something to generate hype for Christmas 2013. They will be battling two new systems for attention. Those systems will be new and fresh and more powerful, but also likely expensive, in limited supply and with limited software support. Nintendo will counter with a system which is readily available and cheaper. But most importantly with a flood of high-quality software. You can expect a 3D Mario which is graphically stunning, A Retro game which is more mature and also pushes the limits graphically, and some new innovative things designed to appeal to the mainstream. They can't announce these things or they will be old news by fall. They also don't want to be copied too soon like they were with the Wii remote. Launching first gives you an edge, but it also allows competitors to react. I would expect that the 3D Mario will be pushed to be a game that makes jaws drop. It will be the game that makes people say that WiiU is not (dramatically) inferior to the newer systems. Retro's game will also probably have a fine level of polish, something akin to Naughty Dog's games.

They´re a bit too silent in my opinion.Sony used to announce games that were still years away from launch (do they still have that practice?), and on the other hand Nintendo seems to be the opposite extreme...two annoying extremes, something in the middle is good enough.

Nintendo is risking a lot by letting 3rd crapty fill in the gaps they should right now. I thought they had learned that from the 3DS!

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

so nintendo is going to secure the core out from under MSony during their year head start by keeping silent of what they are doing so that the majority of their head start appears to be barren of any games let alone good games?

..nintendo really doesn't get the core if that's their plan.

i don't think so...its rather a good idea not to reveal big games now... they need big guns at E3 which they will certanly have if they wait...and nintendo is good at being silent ...
