Forums - Nintendo - Wii U price cut incoming?

Funny how Nintendo said that they wouldn't let the 3DS fiasco happen again, but it has in fact happened again, and like 3DS, I think a price cut is going soon if these numbers keep up. You can bet that Nintendo knows damn well how much 3DS sales improved after a price cut (in addition to a much stronger library). Wii U doesn't have the stronger library coming just yet, but they can at least begin to jumpstart sales with a price cut.

The console should have been $250 for the core package and $300 for the premium from the getgo. If they lowered to this price I might actually get one now instead of waiting for Smash and Mario Kart.

They'll do it like they did with the 3DS and cut the price along with lunching lots of games to take the wind out of the competitors' launches.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Price cut won't come before November.

Why not?

For sure they won't do it before the end of this fiscal year. Then comes E3, when MS and Sony will very likely show what they got, doing before that is way too premature. Then comes summer, not very likely. Now, one could argue that October could also be a very good point, as Pokemon might help to build any momentum. But, November seems a better choice, don't really know, just would take a better entry into the holidays, and a possible launch from competitors.

I'll await my ambassador games then :)

I remember after the desperate price cut the 3DS had, Iwata even cut his own salary in half and vowed not to let that fiasco happen again....but it might be happening again.

It´s ironic, and sad, that Iwata, one of the main people responsible for the successes that were the DS and Wii, is now maybe faced with the same kind of situation that happened only about 18 months ago.

But if that´s what it takes to get the system moving, then so be it.

I think Nintendo needs to understand that people don't care about value. They only care about entry-point price. $300 is too much for a Nintendo console.

This implying that Nintendo consoles are inherently worth less than competitors?

Be very careful.

On topic: Give me some free VC and eShop games, and i won't complain.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

As much as I want to see a price cut right now I do not think it will work. Mainly because there are no major games on it yet. If the drop the price now and people still see no value in it then it will be a hard sell at that new price even if games come out.

In the interim I really think they need to drop this stupid idea of basic bundle first. Then release a white premium bundle.

Then what they should do is announce some big games first (i.e. whatever 3rd party publishing exclusives deals they may have made to hype people up). I am also sure they have something ready for 1st party and are holding it for a later release date to give us an impression of a steady flow.

Then announce a price cut just before that big release or even line it up with that game.

No. Implying Nintendo primary sells to families, where mom and dad are the ones paying for the console.

Yeah, i guess you're right. You can't price yourself out of the mainstream, although i contend that that's something just as true for the competitors as it is for Nintendo.
