He however refused to agree with me, saying the original was way better, for the following reasons:

1) The N64 controller is the genuine experience for playing the game. Different controls can change the difficulty of the game
2) The graphics shouldn't be updated, and the game is best experienced with the original textures, and in its original look as that was how it was "meant" to be.
3) The game needs to be experienced on a bigger screen, and playing on the 3DS's screen does not bring the full experience to the player.

I think his reasoning is ridiculous, but what do you guys think about this? I'm fully behind calling the 3DS version of Ocarina of time the definitive version of the game.

Obviously the 3DS version.

To counter your arguments:

1) Just because you learned to play the game with a N64 controller does'nt make it the genuine experience. Play the water temple again and tell me that on the N64 it's the ''genuine'' way to play it.

2) Just because the limitation at the time forced the game to look like crap does'nt mean that it was ''meant'' to look like crap. I'm sorry, OoT looked great at the time, but after playing it on the 3DS the N64 version looks super terrible.

3) Again, the game look so terrible that I don't see your point. Why does a terribly looking game needs to be experienced on a biger screen? Super Mario 3D Land looks way better than SM64. But does SM64 needs to be experienced on a bigger screen and SM3DL does'nt? I cant understand your logic. OoT on 3DS looks way better on a small screen than the N64 on a bigger screen. The 3D adds alot, and despite the smaller screen, you can alot more details and alot more things going on than on N64.

Now my arguments for the 3DS.

Better graphics. more content(boss battle mode, master quest), better controls, better UI, can play the game on the bus or on a toilet. Can use the bow with the gyroaxis (I actuly loved that option, especyaly on the shooting minigames) And it have a few SS easter eggs :)

For the record he was the one arguing for the N64 version :P Just to clear that up, I share your view XP

Oh, I'm sorry, I missread and thought it was the other way around :P

Considering that the orignal looks hideous and is unplayable for me, I'll have to stick with the 3DS version. The N64 version is bad, I'm so glad that in the more recent Zelda titles we have not needed to go to the item menu by pausing and the 3DS version has the Master Quest.

Tell him to take his nostalgia glasses off, his reasons are pretentious garbage. "I prefer playing with an N64 controller" is one thing; "The N64 version is better because you play it with a trident" is just dumb. This isn't even a question, the 3DS version is superior. It has Master Quest for crying out loud.

I've never really played the N64 or 3DS version, so I'm gonna choose the 3DS one. I bought the GCN disc with Zelda OoT after finishing Twilight Princess and played it for like an hour, but really... With no nostalgia to fall back on, it was a brutal switch and I ended up quitting the game. Fortunately I heard about the 3DS remake and thought this will be a better option, since I do want to play this game. It will be much easier for me to play it on 3DS, I hope they port MM as well.
I think that when they do that, release a new version of the 3DS (preferably with double sliding pads...) I'll finally buy this console.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Checked out a few reviews and the 3DS version was far more reworked. But as mentioned above the old school N64 version would still hold its charm against it .

The original naturally has a unique charm which even the remake can't touch.

However, since the remake is an enhanced version of the original, only made better, it is obviously the better version of the two.

OoT 3D is actually what the game was supposed to look like. And not the N64 version. Miyamoto (I believe) said there were two games severely held back by the N64 hardware and could not realize the original vision. These were OoT and Starfox 64. Both were remade. If you look at the original concept art for Zelda, you'd see that the 3DS version comes a lot closer to realising that look.

Well I played the N64 version and loved it, BUT I couldn't stand the hard analogue stick. It wasn't a gamebreaker or anything , just a thumb breaker. Having said that, it is still a fantastic game, 3DS or N64.

3DS. I think they did a really great job with the graphics. They managed to keep the original vision in tact while updating it. I actually didn't it changed so much until I looked at videos of the original. Basically, they made the 3DS version look as good as I remembered the N64 version looking, if that makes sense. The 3D is a nice bonus.

Controls are kind of a mixed bag. I like the N64 joystick over the circle pad, and the position of the Z button is more comfortable than L. On the other hand, touch access to items is convenient and things like the iron boots work much better. I also like the tilt aiming, although I like the 3D feature more, so I didn't use it too much.

Being able to play on a big screen would be nice, but portability balanced that out. It's be nice if the 3DS could output to a TV or something.

So overall, I like the 3DS version better.

3DS.

The Nintendo 3DS version has:

- more fluid movements (i.e. more frames per second)

- stereoscopic 3D capabilities

- far superior lighting, textures and colors

- much more detailed 3D objects/character models

- sound effects and music of higher quality

- more smooth and faster menus

- more item slots

- Master Quest and the ability to battle bosses more than once

The Nintendo 64 version has:

- preserved a major part of our childhood

So, at this point it is a tie. But thanks to Navi's grave concern about our health in the 3DS version I will have to give the edge to the N64 version.
