What was missing on GC from 3rd parties that was on PS2? GTA
Can't really think of any other major 3rd party IPs that weren't on GC.
If you follow the notion that a Nintendo console is merely a box via which you play Nintendo games, then I would say a modern equivalent of the Gamecube could be a success, but then that also points to why the Gamecube is their second biggest failure behind the Virtual Boy. The games they made for the Gamecube simply weren't good enough by their usual high standards, Metroid Prime being the one exception.
So a modern Gamecube would need far better support from Nintendo themselves.

GTA and other dozens of IPs. When I look to GC, I only see RE1/0, when i look to PS2, I see GTA, Silen Hill 2 and 3(masterpieces along with SH1), MGS2 and 3, DMC, FF X and FF XII, Dragon quest 8, Medal of Honor(when the franchise was good, until European Assault), and other games that I can't remind now.

Of course I'm not denying it. Didn't I already say that? They were considered as toys when Atari was on top, they were considered as toys when Nintendo was on top, they were considered as toys when Sony was on top. |
Sony actually helped level the expensive price of DVD players for adults and adults bought the Playstation 2, but funny enough a lot stuck around. Microsoft came a year later with a DVD drive as well like Sony and bolstered their sales. Sony did the same thing with Blu Ray this year and I thank them for it because now we dont have to disc swap and I dont think I can watch a normal DVD without it being upscaled again. The people has young people playing it but as far as serious gamers it has the oldest stable demographic from spanning from 13-30+ and Microsoft is tearing into that userbase because they want the stable gaming home. Once they took the multiplat exclusivity this gen Microsoft smelled blood in the water, because once you do that and lower the price your product because more enticing. The first half of the gen they beat Sony by becoming Sony in a sense, which is cheaper product with all the top games. That and the comfortable multimedia helps. If DVD and blu Ray weren't a high utility closer for most adults the Playstation brand wouldn't have had stable sales for all the years it has. Microsoft joined because of the fact that Sonys level of multimedia and gaming was growing at a rapid pace and threatening the PC world, so the Xbox was created to crush them. Without Sony taking the hit since the PS2 era non-gamers would've been paying for DVD's for years in a slow market. They did it again in an even greater risk in Blu Ray and look at Blu Ray today, which is a stable and comfortable market. Its eating away at the DVD section.

60% of the third party games (which included iterations of specific third party). Sony had a great portion of them and Microsoft remedied their issue by getting PC developers to port exclusives to them from PC. To count the amount of great third parties Nintendo lacked that the PS2 (let alone the PSX over the N64)had would fill a page. The PS2 era had the most exclusives and the worst insult to injury is that a good percentage of them were gems. Hell, the original Xbox had more third party support than Nintendo, let alone the fact that everyone was biased to it which held its sales below Nintendo.

Final Fantasy. MGS 2 and 3. Devil May Cry. GTA and gran turismo must have sold 60 million units by itself, you never know which third party can make the next big hit, so its good to have as many as you can. if COD was exclusive to 360, i can see ps3 being out sold by 20 million this gen by the 360 but its not.

Mark of Kri, GTA, WWE Smackdown, Rygar, Bully, Mercenaries, God Hand, Maximo, Guitar Hero, Suikoden franchise, Xenosaga, Champions of Norrath, Tekken. The list goes on and on, thats just off the top of my head.
@S.T.A.G.E: Well yes, adults were buying it for their kids. No matter how you twist it, or would want it to be otherwise, that's what they do. That's why the gaming forums are full of teenagers with PS3's and 360's.
Not only are they seen as something that kids do, the marketing itself only supports the image. Sony's marketing department haven't yet breached out of marketing the PS brand to others than teenagers. With their marketing it's really hard to reach grown-ups. Then again, if they were marketing the brand to grown-ups, they would be losing their core market. Maybe you're not quite getting it, but the core market for videogames are immature males, with the vast majority of them being teenagers.
I do agree Sony bought the DVD price down with PS2 and BD price down with PS3, but let's face it; who cares. That has really nothing to do with to with the subject.
