And of course people are going to blame it on smarthphones, ignoring that the 3DS and Vita aren't exactly the strongest handheld offerings of all time...

if you we're a dad and your kid asked you for a gaming device and you had to choose between a 200$ handheld plus 50$ for every game or a 399$ IPHONE with free games and 1$ games plus it's a phone.

What would you choose?

i would choose an iphone without even thinking about it.

If you were a dad, and you kid asked you for a gaming device, and you had to choose between a SNES with $60+ games or a commodore 64 with much cheaper games (on disc or cassette or whatever) pus other functionalities what would you choose?

Thing is, kids don't say "daddy I want a game platform". They will say "daddy I want Pokemon".

I LOVE ICELAND!

The games on Smartphones and Tablets are pure shit, so why do people keep buying them?

There's some great games on smartphones and tablets. They're fun, free and frivolous.

Also, as the specs of smartphones and tablets increase, the quality of the games released for them will also increase.

Would bright, attractive colors fit in the same category?

They're free or cost $1 pretty much, they're not great in many cases they're not even what you would consider an actual game but still shovelware basically to millions and millions of devices which cost nothing to slap together still makes some money. Not everything does tho, I think it's something like 61% of all apps on iOS have never been downloaded, so not everything is an Angry Birds or a Plants V Zombies..... infact those are kinda the only 2 which are :D

Speaking as someone who played games when I was 4-5 I can tell you it does matter, heck even today my 6year old Nephew loves Luigi in mario Kart and played Luigis mansion because the character was the same he liked.... not every child can be amused by flashing light apps, nor does every parent want them to be.

3DS did pretty well. If the Vita manages to step up its game this year, it should be fine. 3DS sales are even higher than NDS sales at its time, so its really just the PSV.

I think the handheld market is facing the same problem as the home consoles will face next gen; no new adopters. DS was what the Wii was for the casuals, and PSP was what PS360 was for hard core (very simplified and generalized). Both the handheld and home consoles had monster generations, which the like we might not see again for a while.

Long story short: dedicated game systems ain't going nowhere for a while. They might not sell as well as in the 7th gen, but they will continue to sell well.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
