Forums - Sony - Sony files patent for new tech to stop second hand games

What if the game goes out of print or is impossible to find new? I'm assuming that they plan on having an extremely robust online service that will continue to offer all games as digital downloads in the future.

Yes, same as Vita. Recently even PS3 has been stepping it up with day one new games. I can't wait till every game is available on PSN.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Not only Sony, M$ seems to want it too, and developers are crying, they want at least to gain something with used games.

They DO gain something - brand recognition and possibly even money if the gained money is spent on more games.

Used games are bad juju anyway, don't buy them.

On the other hand, GameStop would really get hurt by this!

I'm not really OK with completely getting rid of used games.  I personally (I like my games not-scratched and my cases to look like they haven't been chewed on) and professionally (gotta eat!) don't like them, but absolutely recognize they have their place.  If people want to buy used, go right ahead.

I think it's a neat idea because it could be a nice way to get around the long codes you would normally input for buying new perks.

You seem to be the only person, other than me, who understands this...

*High five for OCD!*

This is probably one of those patents companies file just so that if someone else does this in the future, they can sue.

And damn, those 2 mod posts...

4 ≈ One

Honestly, I can't see Sony following through with this patent unless one or more of its competitors join in, but from what I've read, I think that Microsoft is also potentially aiming to cut down on used sales. As a PC and console gamer, much of my library has shifted towards digital (I rarely trade-in or buy used games), so this wouldn't really affect me, but I can see how Gamestop or GameFly would be hit dramatically by this.

Regarding out of print media etc the whole library will be available on digital download anyway. There will never be a completely unavailable game.

Tease.

Well that's a good way alienate a lot of buyers. Second hand market is pretty big at least in the US where Sony is in third place.

Good for Wii U/720 owners who can tout "Oh yeah? Well I can still buy cheap used games."

Someone had to do it anyways. Eventually one company was going to go anti-used, I'm just surprised I would hear it from Sony first.

It's just that simple.

This is just a modification of an online pass that doesn't require a voucher. PSASBR uses this for cross-buy so that people couldn't just sell their Vita copies. Makes sense why they would want to expand this.
