Forums - Sony - Sony files patent for new tech to stop second hand games

People keep talking about how this is going to destroy used game sales, which it could, but I don't think that's what its coolest use is.

I think it's much better for things like online passes or other special things you usually get for buying a game new that you have to input a code for. With this, you don't have to input those terrible codes, the console should just know this is a new copy of the game so you get this and this and that.

Yeah, Sony has done on disk stuff like this. Cross buy being the best example.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

it will happen eventually with digital and i cant wait

Pretty much sucks. I like buying used (and even reselling). I thought the code to get online was fair to charge for when it was resold as there is an actual cost associated with the servers and thus a new user getting the game should chip in. But, stopping all used game sells is just bad.

Those of you ok with this, what if it followed suit in other markets? Cars, clothes, books, etc? Why is it different for books and movies? This simply isn't right in any shape or form. An active used market is good for everyone as it still keeps money pumping through the market as the game was bought new at some point and likely that person (and others) will buy more new games too due to saving money with the used market. I know it works like that for me.

I'm not really OK with completely getting rid of used games.  I personally (I like my games not-scratched and my cases to look like they haven't been chewed on) and professionally (gotta eat!) don't like them, but absolutely recognize they have their place.  If people want to buy used, go right ahead.

I think it's a neat idea because it could be a nice way to get around the long codes you would normally input for buying new perks.

Also, and this may have been answered elsewhere but I'm far too lazy to read the entire thread, have they said how they would handle people with multiple consoles?

I have two PS3's (though my BC one doesn't really recognize blue tooth devices anymore ) and two 360's and I actively use both. If the PS4 really did have something like this to stop you from playing used games, would this method be able to recognize I have two PS4's that I play on?

I don't see why so many people here rant against selling used games. When I was younger and only was able to buy games from my pocket money I sold games after playing through them (I only kept my absolute favorites) and bought new games from the money I made that way. If I hadn't been able to do that I'd have bought WAY less games, making the publisher less money. I'm also pretty sure that I'm not the only one who did it like this.

It read as if part of the whole check was also looking at your "player ID". So I'm thinking it takes that into account.

They better not even think about it as it will infringe property laws and be a crazy issue.
Digital games seem to void used games. Just sell them cheaper and without fuss you destroy the used market. Its all about meeting the consumer demands. They seem to already be doing that with PSN, so it would be best they dont risk something that can be good (PS4) with something not worth the hassle.

What if the game goes out of print or is impossible to find new? I'm assuming that they plan on having an extremely robust online service that will continue to offer all games as digital downloads in the future.

I'm not sure if people are just trolling or being serious by seeing this as a good thing and helping publishers to make money, as I don't see either of the two happening.

The idea in getting rid of retail is just aiming for higher profit margins, however retail is way too big share of the market for any console manufacturer to ignore.

Digital distribution is the past, present and the future, and I predict digital retail distribution being still around for a long time, even if digital online distribution would eat some of its share (notice that I really don't believe in viability of analog distribution).
