What is so special about Zelda in the first place? I'd rather have another 3D Metroid Prime.
Tease.

Ocarina of Time is still the definitive Zelda experience, it's the third and last game in the series to take that crown. It is also to this day still the most fun out of all the Zelda games to play, and also the most satisfying.
Later Zelda games, like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, despite being newer, don't even have as much quality content as Ocarina of Time. Much of the newer Zelda games are bloated with padding-style gameplay, like collecting all sorts of different moon tears with no additional context other than "Collect X-amount to enter dungeon Y"
In fact, the only games in the last 15 years that have really reached the sort of acclaim that Ocarina of Time has reached have been the Super Mario Galaxy games. Ocarina of Time, to this day is still one of the best gaming experiences that can be had.
As for a film reference, you can bring in all the special effects and new directorial techniques of top movies like Terminator 2, Lord of the Rings, and Avatar all you want, while these films may strike high on lists, you're not going to have films that will easily rub out Citizen Kane, Casablanca, or Lawrence of Arabia as being regarded as the greatest films in history.
It's one thing to impress people with new things at the time of release, it is quite another to become a timeless classic, and quite another still to do both; and Ocarina of Time in its time had the sort of explosive impact that has only been seen a small handful of times in the history of the industry, and has also solidified itself as one of the greatest classics of the industry. That is why it consistently tops all time greatest games lists. The DNA of Ocarina of Time is so imprinted on the industry that we see it in some way in most major adventure games released to this day.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
Bad taste.

My top 5 would have the likes of: * M.U.L.E * Civilization * Borderlands/Borderlands 2 * Zillions of Games * Something else I don't recall offhand now. I could name a number of them.
Reality here is that as much as I think Zelda is cool, I don't have room for it. Do I have issue with people thinking it is their top 5 game? No I don't. But, for me, it isn't there. |
M.U.L.E , just for mentioning that game I love you .
Research shows Video games help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot
It´s on number 3 because...Windwaker,
and the...MOON
THE MOON!!!!!11

I just did that dungeon last night.. stayed up till around 5am.. took me about 1 whole day without any guides.. Very frustrating and.. satisfying to boot when you beat something without any help...
It's getting better but still imo not the best Zelda..

Nostalgia is a powerful tool, my friend. Keep in mind a LOT of people's first forays into videogames were in the mid 90's, right when the PS1 and N64 first came out, so for many people Ocarina of Time was the first major release they played, giving it a nostalgic leg-up. Lots of people in this thread have given truly fair and understandable explanations as to why it's not QUITE as good as people tend to think of it, but yet you still seem to think it's okay for you to pull a temper tantrum becuase people don't like what you like? How would you like it if I made a thread asking people why they didn't have Final Fantasy VI or A Link to the Past at the top of their lists? Hell, I could even 'pull rank' becuase I'm a game reviewer and that could, in theory, make my opinion more valid than yours. I mean, it's NOT more valuable than yours, such a statement would be absurd, but claiming it was would definitely piss you off something fierce, wouldn't it? People who write 'best 100 of all time' articles are prone to just as much bias and nostalgia as you and I; you'd do well to remember that. |
Playing the nostalgia card is a dangerous game. In effect it totally delegitmizes someone's opinion.
