Forums - Nintendo - Why people hated Skyward Sword?

@blackstarr. I didn't hate the music, but there wasn't much in the way of timeless melodies that we've seen in the past from Zelda. And I love change, I would love more change in Zelda. The problem (for me) with SS was the execution, not any changes in the formula. I would like more change, and more spectacular execution. Rock my world like O o T. Completely change things up and take the presentation to the next level.

I agree about the timeless memories. I recently replayed OoT after a decade of never playing it and I'm surprised at how well I remembered every single one of the ocarina songs... So simple... so good.

- don't outsource Zelda again - the Capcom parts were uninspired
- stick to your own ideas, don't try to please the internet, stay weird
- don't westernize / maturize the series
- no voice work

I firmly agree with these points. Especially no voice work. I see the lack of voice work (and the resulting use of imagination in its place) as an inexorable part of LoZ's charm. Not every book needs pictures, not every movie needs CGI effects.

Even as an SS-skeptic, I don't think the Zelda series will improve by trying to imitate modern rpgs. If anything, I think they should be looking backwards at games like Oot/MM/WW and just making everything MASSIVER, prettier and a bit less linear. Bring back the old tunes along with numerous varied environments and lots of exploration and I'd be more than happy - it mights even sell me a Wii-U.

Too much planning, and you'll never get anything done.

Karl Pilkington.

As a side note, I would love if they started developing a modern-RPG style LoZ and then it became its own series, like RE and DMC, lol.

Another reason I loved Majora's Mask so much is the world felt SO big, and so alive. Terminal was an exciting place to be, nod racing down the snowy mountain to run into Clock Town or running to the canyon to the Thieves Hideout to get Kafei's mask back - all these things still send shivers up and down my spine today. I know this is a SS thread but I feel this is relevant, as it made a comparatively small world map feel immense and full, and this is something I think most of us Zelda fans want.

I only had a few things I didn't like. Fi was useless. Said the obvious and was unskipable, in places. What was up with her "hints". They didn't help. The Motion controls on EVERYTHING. There are things that should of been the A button. The text and information text. You have speed options for a reason Nintendo... And I know what a Skull medal is. STFU. They worked on the game for years. But didn't notice restarting a battle before the cut-scene annoys people? I rank that up as bad as the GTA games making you redrive to the mission you failed.

- That T-Pain thing is the most annoying sidekick EVER.
- It treats players like fucking retards...(Birdrider ceremony anyone? 20 things blinking and peeping when health is low, tutorials for 3 year old and 95 yr old grannies, tutorials which come over and over again and you can't skip, etc.)
- VERY slow, lame, boring first 2-3 hours. In fact, I wouldn't have kept playing if it wouldn't have been a Zelda game.
- Underdeveloped story, too childish to be taken serious, too wanna be epic to be "cute" (I have no problems with mario games, Rayman or LBP)
- On top of that, it can't be ignored because it has too many cutcenes and dialogs.
- No voices, really?
- Well, Link can't talk, but he moans and screams all the time, like a little bitch.
- Too much backtracking, the game gets too long
- Too much collect 3 of those, so you can collect 5 of those, so that you get 1 of these 3 keys you need. (It's gameplay-wise repetitive and disconnects you from the story)
- Extremly lame side quests.
-Gayest foe EVER. "Look at my body, it's beautiful" *tongue-flickin* - WHAT.DA.FUCK.
And yet, overall I enjoyed the game. I loved the battle mechanics, the puzzles, the dungeon design and the boss battles.

This was the 1st Zelda game I've played through and I saw the potential and talent of its developers, but I also couldn't ignore some major flaws, wrong desicions and some aged mechanics.

I think many people and revewiers a bit biased toward this series and force themselves to believe that this was a great game, mainly because of nostalgia.

Before the shitstorm comes to me, I'd like to remind you that I still enjoyed the game and I'll play the new one, hoping they correct SS's flaws (which most of them are easy to improve) and keep the strong points strong. Then they'll make a truly great game.

3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

I liked Skyward Sword, it was a vast improvement over Windwanker and Twilight Princess, but not nearly as good as Majora's Mask or Ocarina of Time.

Skyward Sword's largest problem was the fact that the controls needed to be re-calibrated during gameplay. This was one of the most irritating things in the history of the series.

Windwanker??? Lol.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Skyward Sword is the 2nd weakest Zelda of the 3D's. Its crazy that after a decade Ocarina Of Time still hasn't been trumped. The dungeons and bosses particularly the finale are the best parts of skyward sword but unfortunately its got to many flaws
- Long intro, boring as!
- Fetch Quests, to many of them and unnecessary
- Fi is annoying
- Worst 3D Zelda soundtrack
- Motion Controls can get frustrating at times
- Unable to skip txt
- Terrible Pacing

Every Zelda has done something to improve on OOT's formula but theres one thing OOT is still king of and that is pacing , that and OOT doesnt have stupid fetch quests, a long dragged out intro like every 3D iteration etc. If Skyward Sword improved on OOT's mechanics and perfected its pacing then it could of been the best.

The hand-holding is really terrible, yes. Still, SS is not easier than most other games, in terms of the action etc. FI giving the hint before I had time to figure anything out on my own was horrible, but then again most puzzles are so easy there's not much to figure out anyway.

The problem is that Nintendo thinks Zelda can be for EVERYONE, but it won't ever be. Let's face it, Zelda is for us nerds. My wife and even my mom can play Mario all the time (2D mario, not 3D), they'll never play Zelda. And nothing Nintendo does can change that. Miyamoto was shocked that so many people didnt finish OoT, and since then they've tried to put in hand-holding to make "regular" people finish the game. Not.Gonna.Happen.

So make a Zelda that caters to the fans of action-adventure, don't make it to try to turn the Wii Sports and Mario "casuals" into "hardcore" (hate those terms).

But the artstyle was great. Not as great as Wind Waker, but pretty cool. I really dont get the "realistic graphics" Zelda fans. The cartoon/cel style of WW and SS makes the universe feel familiar to someone who grew up on NES Zeldas or even LttP. It's an adventure game set in a fantasy world. I am actually replaying Wind Waker right now, and this game is now 8 or 9 years old, and it hasnt dated at all, just like LttP. Timeless graphics. Twilight Princess looks godawful today.

But like I said in my previous post, regarding gameplay, if we wont Zelda to be "refreshed", it needs new leadership. Aonuma should go work on Animal Crossing or something.

-The lack of overworld
-Combat system, where you had to hit the enemies "by hint" (which was virtually the only way to kill even the most basic enemies)
-Too long cutscenes with uninteresting content
-The lack of "Zelda feel"
-Too linear
-The lack of action

It looks like with every new Zelda, the series stray more and more away from what was fun in the series (ok, maybe SS wasn't as bad as Twilight Princess).
