I find it odd that theres so many people in here with only a Sony PSN ID in their profile that all magically own a 360 and have played through Halo 4 extensively.........

If all of you own 360s wheres your Gamertag? To those saying Far Crysole. No it doesn't, Ive played both look at my sig. To all those that say Uncharted and God Of War crushes it, again no they dont. My PSN ID is right there

far cry 3 looks way better than halo 4. even on console.

So a sub 720p, constant screen tearing, frame rate dropping, pop in everywhere, terrible draw distance game looks better than one that doesnt have any of these problems?

Im not trying to say Far Cry 3 looks terrible because it doesnt but the game isnt even close to Halo 4 in a single area.  If you disagree lets see your gamertag showing youve played both

yea i agree about far cry 3 running like shit on consoles but i still think it looks better graphically but thats because i like the lush environment, its just my taste. you dont have to agree with me and i dont have to agree with you, everyone has their preferences.

God, this was the EXACT same problem of Killzone 3 vs Crysis 2, and people were defiant in their defense of the latter. I honestly can't judge Far Cry 3 vs Halo 4 (I haven't played Halo 4 yet), but if it's as you put it, I can understand why people are adamant about it vs Far Cry 3.

Yeah I think Killzone 3 is certainly better than Crysis 2.

It sounds like Im hating on Far Cry 3 on 360 but Im really not.  Its a great game and beautiful a lot of the time but the game seriius suffers from some technical issues, the worst of which is screen tearing.  Its everywhere all over the place to the point of actually being distracting.  One of the things that really sold Halo 4 is how beautifulky the game runs.  Its true 720 without any of the issues Far Cry 3 suffers from.

I haven't seen it on 360 yet, but I can believe it. I have the PC version and because of the type of graphics card I use, the game will not take advantage of the SLI profile. Sure, I can adjust it in the NVIDIA control panel, but I shouldn't have to. I've also seen it on PS3, and while it's graphically excellent standing against the PC, I saw plenty of major frame rate drops.

Yep pretty much.  I bet its gorgeous on PC but really on console its got some big performance problems.  Still beautiful but far too flawed when compared to Halo 4.  To me Halo 4 is best looking FPS this gen and top 3 overall with God of War 3 and Uncharted 3.  Far Cry 3 isnt even top 10 IMO on console.  I dont really blame the developer though, I just think the hardware on PS3 and 360 is just really starting to show its age outside of optomized 1st party big budget games.  Gears Judgement, GOW Ascension, Last of Us, and Beyond will all look great but at this point we really need new consoles next year, the gap between console and PC is giant now and it shows with titles like Far Cry 3

You might want to have a word with this guy.

Far cry 3 does have more detailed environments though and is open world. Problem is, unlike Halo 4, Farcry 3 tries to do more than the hardware is capable. And the result shows.

Sometimes, beauty lies in the balance of assets used.

Quality over quantity indeed.

Im playing Far Cry 3 right now and it doesnt have more detail though.  The game isnt even top 10 on 360.  Gears, Halo, Battlefield, Crysis, and others are better.  The game has serious issues running on console and has some majorly glaring technical flaws.  Im sure its gorgeous on PC but I dont find it impressive on 360 at all.

Great game though and the environment is beautiful a lot of the time

I've played both games. Farcry 3 on PS3, and I was surprised it managed to have all this foliage and draw distance, and I've played Halo4 just the same.

Halo 4 has a much better art direction and its graphics are more beautiful not because of an added level of detail, where I see Farcry 3 coming ahead, but because it runs really smooth and has a really effective art direction.

Hmm interesting.  I havent played FC3 on PS3 so maybe it runs better on that than on 360.  Because I actualky thought draw distance was one of the weak points for the game on Xbox as it really suffers from distant pop in.  I agree the amount of foliage is pretty damn impressive though

Thanks @Aldro.

Far Cry 3: 12
Halo 4: 9
Journey: 8
Max Payne 3: 3
Hitman: Absolution: 2
Assassin's Creed: 1

So far Far Cry 3 is the overall 2012 Best Graphics... the second place is between Halo 4 and Journey.

First of all his list is missing huge publications like GameInformer which gave Halo 4 best graphics.

The author of that blog is taking his sweet time updating the list.

Far Cry 3: The Digital Foundry Verdict

Compared to the first stretch of Dunia's legs on console the engine improvements are small but impactful. We don't see anything as game-changing as the wildfire dynamic being added to the equation, but refinements to motion capture and facial animation technology do much to amplify the beats in Far Cry 3's story. At the centre of the show is Michael Mando's delightfully off-kilter performance as Vaas, and the new tools are applied to equally great effect with the player's first-person hand animations. Jungle exploration has always been the running theme of the series, but propping up a narrative backbone in this way only adds to your sense of purpose around the islands.

But which version offers the best experience? Alas, abundant full-screen tearing does much to curtail the look of an otherwise gorgeously designed game on console platforms, for which both PS3 and 360 are guilty to equal degrees. Frame-rate is also a big drag too, and we'd hoped for better than the 20-30FPS fluctuations we're getting from both platforms during gunplay - though 360 fares slightly better here overall. There are stability issues with the PC release too but given the right hardware specs this is undeniably the road to take for a tear-free experience.

Image quality bears mention too: both console releases are tightly paired in their approach to multi-sampling native 720p outputs, and the only eye-catching difference is the dithered shadows on Sony's platform around globally illuminated areas. As if to compensate here, we see superior texture filtering on PS3 and slightly less evidence of triangle culling after fast-travelling around the archipelago. It's a close call in many respects, but the shadow issue sticks out even without the other formats to compare it to, leading us to give the 360 a nod here as well.

In all, Ubisoft Montreal has conjured up a beautiful, boar-skinning, hang-gliding romp on all three platforms, though tolerance is advised for console owners whose pet peeves include screen tearing. Otherwise, the scale of cut-backs to these versions isn't as extreme as we'd expected going in. Many principle effects and assets are faithfully upheld from the PC version - even down to the taxing ambient occlusion, and global lighting. Image quality purists will know where to find all the bells and whistles, but in the final tally, Far Cry 3 stands as a strong multi-platform release.

Yeah the screen tearing is awful.  I was not aware the game was native 720 though?  Is that native?  The game didnt look it while playing it

Digital Foundry

"The 360 version runs at 1280x704, with eight-pixel borders at the top and bottom of the screen accounting for the reduction. It's unclear how this benefits performance precisely (we suspect it's easier on memory management), but the avoidance of any upscaling means we're left with a very clear image indeed"

"Bizarrely, the PS3 takes the same tack in terms of odd resolution, albeit with a slightly more aggressive crop to the native 720p output. Subtle borders are added to the sides of the image here, in addition to those on the vertical axis, giving us an overall resolution of 1274x702"
