Forums - Gaming - Valve will release PC/console next year

Well the real reason devs have been showing so much love to consoles lately is because of piracy..... so moving the pc to the living room won't change that for devs

The biggest problem about PCs is Windows.

Epically misquoted.

"He also expects companies to start selling PC packages for living rooms next year—setups that could consist of computers designed to be hooked up to your TV and run Steam right out of the gate. And yes, Newell said, they'd compete with next-gen consoles from companies like Microsoft and Sony."

Not Valve.

So basically it's a gaming PC built around Steam that takes a lot of the guesswork associated with maintaining and upgrading a PC out of the equation?

This is really exciting.

They should call it a "console".
Revolutionary.

people who mod the games on their pcs which will improve many games from month to month for you as owner of this "console" and all the f2p games steam has and will get in the future which would be interesting for console players as well.

revolutionary

(we don't really know a lot about those plans right now but i absolutely trust gabe and that he knows what can be successful and what not)

I feel like they'd have better luck if they simply made a PC build. Buy the components and sell the systems in mass bulk, giving Alienware, Ibuypower and those other guys a run for their money. The system can still be fully upgrade-able like a standard PC. Just update the build that they sell every 2 years and sell the components of the new build so that the guys who bought the old aren't left behind.

Just trying to get a literal "ValveStation/SteamBox" out there seems a bit risky.

It will be interesting to watch how this turns out, Gabe's body does seem to be ready.

I think Valve are thinking of releasing a budget pre-built PC that can be used with the new Steam UI and controller. I think it could help make PC gaming cheaper and more accessible.

It sounds simply like HTPCs and he's predicting that manufacturers will be pushing them a bit more. With Steam Big Picture mode, it makes sense.

this will fail very hard, it doesnt make any sense what so ever to make this device at all. it will be a gimped pc, making it closer to a console, without 1st party games . there is no way it can compete with the 1st party games from nintendo, sony and microsoft. also the retail stores wont give up shelf space to this over the wiiu,360,ps3,xbox next or ps4. which means it will be next to the pc shelf, which is extremely small as it is.
valve should just stay on a pc and release console games when they can.

Huge unnecessary gamble. Unless of course it is a collaboration with a hardware manufacturer.

Agreed, again.

Unless this is with Apple, is there a single hardware manufacturer on Earth that is going to put up the bucks to really compete in this space? Samsung? Maybe?  (And given Newell's rather un-kind words for the House of Jobs, I find that a bit hard to believe.).
