Forums - Nintendo - Pachter: Nintendo Needs More Exclusives to Beat PS3 and Xbox360

I kind of agree that the U will struggle to compete in the core market unless Nintendo does something to compete in that market, more than getting multi-plats. They needs games like ZombiU, that's a good start.

I believe 3rd party exclusives will be the key, not 1st party exclusives, as Nintendo's 1st party exclusives generally don't appeal to the PS360 core crowd. They need to steal exclusives much like Microsoft has done in the past, in order to win marketshare. If they do that early enough, they have a good chance at snagging a considerable portion of that martket for at least half the gen, until the two other consoles quickly outpace the U HW-wise (through optimization and dev knowledge growth).

Though Pachter's idea is right, his solution is all wrong and his pessimism very misplaced.

Problem is though, that Nintendo won't pay for exclusivity like MS. They're publishing Bayo2, but it's not like they were in a bidding war with MS over the game...

I actually think it'd be somewhat interesting if Nintendo just accepted that Western 3rd party devs treat them like crap and just started to fill out the holes in their software library on their own, relying on multi-plats more for things like yearly sports game updates and that's it.

Heck, I wouldn't mind if Nintendo maybe went back to making their own NBA (Courtside series on N64/GCN), NHL
(NHL Stanley Cup on SNES), and MLB games (Ken Griffey Jr. games).

Outside of like five-to-six third party franchises that tend to be multiplat -- Call of Duty, Madden NFL, FIFA, Resident Evil, LEGO, Sonic, how many even really matter on Nintendo consoles? I guess throw in Assassin's Creed now and what else? Maybe Nintendo would like to see Final Fantasy return for a while before it switches to the PS4/720.

If I'm Nintendo, I'd perhaps look at some cheap options to expand the diversity of my catalog. Contract the Darksiders and Saint's Row teams to make a fantasy-action IP and a sandbox game, since THq is now defunt both teams are likely deserpate for work. I'd maybe look at picking up an underutilized movie license ... perhaps something like Mission: Impossible (could do some neat things with the Wii U tablet with that for sure), so you're not building completely unknown IPs every time.

I'd go ahead and greenlit a soccer sim to compete with FIFA and ISS. Add in an arcade mode that lets you play as Mario and co. Soccer is obviously huge in Europe, Asia, South America, Japan, and growing in North America.

I think you have some good points here! I also think they could buy some 2nd party studios to make some of these games; we don't wanna loose any Mario games or Zelda games because Nintendo are too busy making "mature" games!!

If he says Wii U needs exclusives, this means the Wii U will be a success even without exclusives! I can hear the champagnes poping in N offices as we speak.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

I am not sure what point this guy is trying to establish. 9 out of the top 10 exclusive franchises are developed by Nintendo.

Really? What are the top 10 exclusive franchises then?

From the last generation only (No 3DS or WIi U numbers):

Wii Sports/Play - 135 million

Pokemon - 73 million

New Super Mario Bros. - 55 million

Mario Kart - 55 million

Brain Age/Academy - 45 million

Wii Fit - 44 million

Halo 36 million

Super Mario (3D) - 27 million

Nintendogs - 25 million

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics 24 million

And if you don't want to count 3D and 2D Mario as separate franchises, then #11 - Legend of Zelda would be the new #10 at 19 million.
#12 is Gears of War at 18 million, then Animal Crossing and Kinect Sports are each around 17 million. The Dragon Quest games land between 16 and 17 million. Sony is not nearly as powerful a player with exclusive franchises: The highest Sony exclusive franchises were Uncharted and Monster Hunter at 15 million on par with the Professor Layton games, followed by Gran Turismo at 12 million.

These do not include Wii Ware or Virtual console versions of the franchises. Otherwise, Nintendo franchises would be even higher.

The bottom line is that Nintendo is by far the most powerful when it comes to exclusive franchises.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

1) To be honest, if I was 3rd party developer, and saw Nintendo's push for 3rd parties on WiiU, and than saw how they undedeveloped their hardware in some cruical areas that will just raise the price for me if I want to develop for it (and it will, considering all current and future HD consoles have/will have powerful CPUs, so I have to do special "GeePeeGeePee U" magic, if that's even possible for some of game code that is performing poorly, like AI, or make my port performing/looking worse compared to other versions), quite possibly I might be pretty pissed at Nintendo to.

2) I'm hoping they will do exatly that - they have enough money and IPs from which to draw to make some new and exciting IPs that will bring back N64 diversity they ones had. That said, as I mentioned before - Guardians of Zelda (Shadows of the Hylians), action-adventure-RPG with Shekiahs in main role, for me please :)

Nintendo needs Metroid Prime 4. If gamers can't care about that, I will stop caring about gamers.

They didn't care about Metroid Prime 3, so you don't need to wait with your indifference.

True. I bet it's because Halo 3 came out that month.

And people wonder why I don't like Halo very much...

And why is that? They are indirectly doing it for Bayo, they're paying for an exclusive, though it is a different situation, it is still a strategy to it. So regardless of how it's being done, it's being done, and that's the bottom line.

You missed the part where he mentioned attracting the core gamers, as understood as being the PS360 gamers, as incorrect the term may be, since we all know Nintendo core gamers already own Nintendo consoles.

When it comes to the PS360 market, those games don't attract.

I agree that they SHOULD be doing it more. Perhaps not getting into a bidding war, but pay 3rd parties to develop games for their systems. Or just get more 2nd party studios.

What Retro and Monolith have done is great! Just buy Platinum games already :D
