Because handheld gaming doesn't interest me in the slightest. I've never owned a handheld, and I doubt I ever will.
When I'm on a bus/train or walking somewhere, I want to use that time to think rather than be glued to a screen. (God knows I spend enough time staring at one already)
For me, gaming in something I do in the comfort of my home once I have finished with work/university for the day, and playing a handheld at home seems utterly pointless to me when I could just plug in a console and play games that are more suited to my play style. (2 hour long uninterrupted sessions rather than small pick-up-and-play bites)
3DS is my main gaming machine. Plus, Vita doesn't have any games within my interest.

I haven't purchased one yet, but I've been considering it more and more lately, especially after seeing the list of free games being offered through PlayStation Plus. Two reasons why I haven't picked one up yet: First, there haven't been any must-have games for me yet, and second, the lack of upcoming releases is troubling.
You're missing the response that is probably true for the majority of consumers (if not people on this site)
- My smart phone or tablet is good enough for playing games on the go
Not bought one, not likely to ever. At the moment, Wii U and 3DS have so much more that interests me, so step 1 is buying those.

I can see a lot of people being turned off by the fear that the system may not have a future.

Could not agree more. Handheld gaming will be fazed out by or fused together with tablet/phone gaming within five years. Handhelds as a pure gaming device (with some multimedia capability) is on the way out.
OT: I don't own one, I haven't owned a handheld since the Arari Lynx. Handheld gaming is not for me, pure and simple, and that's just fine.
