3DS is being inconsistent in Japan.
While NSMB2, Nintendogs+Cats, Brain Age and some others will struggle to compare to the sales of their predecessors , Animal Crossing is already making the DS version cry for its mommy; during the week of 27 November 2005, VGC shows Wild World to have sold 340k. Well over twice this amount for New Leaf! Of course, this can't possibly maintain since no game will sell that much in Japan. Ever. (The DS version finished significantly over 5m.) But it's still unbelievably decent.
I don't get why AC is doing so well while some others aren't. Can't wait to compare its legs to its predecessor. To keep up this proportional lead, it'll need something over 300k (~250k physical?) next week. Don't think it can keep up quite that well, but it'll do a hell of a lot nonetheless.

It's simple. Animal Crossing is better than Mario, pets, and Dr. Kawashima. :P

Anyway, I would not be surprised if AC:NL becomes the bestselling 3DS game in Japan rather quickly. I don't think anything short of Pokemon will unseat it, unless maybe Monster Hunter 4 does about as well as the PSP versions.

Mainly because (in my honest opinion) Nintendo's audience changed in Japan over the years. Maybe it's a proof the casual crowd is shrinking... but then again Animal Crossing is mainly mainstream and very accessible franchise that appeals to everyone... Maybe I should shut up XD Is there anyone with a pretty good explanation? Maybe because Dr. Kawashima received poor promotion, Nintendogs was a launch title and people got tired of NSMB games...

I'm with you, I find VGKing's posts both confusing and pointless, but mostly confusing. Oh, not to mention baseless and false.

lol @him trying to talk about infrastructure.

What a rude person. Did your mommy not teach you any manners? It's not nice to talk about someone especially if they can hear everything you're saying.

You got a problem with me? I'm right here. Let's have a nice argument.

I know you can read that.

I'd rather not waste my time, especially not with an attitude like that.

Seems like you're the one with an attitude. Let's have a nice converstation. Come on.

My original comment still holds value even though I used it in a different context. Nintendo's online infrastructure is in fact weaker than the competition. You disagree?

I remember some people bitching about what happens if they lose their 3DS.  You should be able to redownload them if you log onto the Club Nintendo account with another 3DS.  However, there is the question what if someone just activates their account on their friends 3DS and they get all your games for free.   I'll look into it but if someone already knows then please tell.

I recently had the worst customer service experience of my life over this very issue (yes, with NIntendo of all companies)--short version: do *not* DL anything to your 3DS you aren't willing to part w/ permanently if your 3DS is lost or stolen. Trust me. Utter and complete nightmare. They will run you around until you basically give up.

(I understand this wasn't always the case, but after a dozen emails, multiple phone calls, and a report to the BBB, it wasn't resolved satisfactorily.)

It means that Nintendo has the weakest online infrastructure, so 200k digital sales for any game is impossible.

VGKing said:

No, I have no idea how much traffic Nintendo's servers can handle.

@bold
Are you being serious here? The 3DS isn't exactly known for its digital content. I can assure you this wont' be a problem.

I must say, your ignorance is pretty astonishing. I'd suggest taking steps to remedy this, but my guess is that this ignorance is largely willful.

You obviously misunderstood. By "online infrastructure" I mean their eShop as a whole being weak/primitive compared to the competition. I wasn't talking about their servers, but as long as we're on the topic, at the moment, I don't think their servers could hold up very well if there was enough demand for digital content on their systems. This is all just speculation of course. I have no insisde info. This is just an educated guess, so take it with a grain of salt.

Would you mind retracting on your comments? This is getting more and more confusing. Animal Crossing sold 200k on the eShop so severs can handle all the overwhelming demand. You were wrong, get over it and stop bashing Nintendo.

Bashing? I'm not bashing anything or anyone. Just stating facts. 200k digital is an impressive feat, but not all of is actually digital if you know what I mean. I'd love to know how many of these digital downloads were from those download codes they sold at retail.

They're still downloaded afterall, so I don't consider them really retail sales. What is the point of digging that much to dismiss this incredible feat Nintendo has accomplished, which is finally making people's interest grow in their online offering? Instead of diminishing the effort, you should welcome a bright move from Nintendo to offer their games both digitally and physically (with no consideration of competition whereas in the statement).

Upset? Not in the slightest.

Vita has nothing to do with this topic. Stop assuming crap. I don't even own a Vita.

BTW, they're not really "digital sales" since they were sold at retail.

I think I fully understand what you're saying, but I didn't read the much earlier stuff so maybe it was less clear a few pages ago.

All 200k of the reported digital sales are retail digital. Physical cards bought from a retail store. There are no sales figures yet for digital downloads bought directly from the eShop.

But your opinion that retail digital sales aren't really "digital sales" counfounds me. The true barrier to digital distribution, the reason digital sales aren't even close to usurping retail sales as the primary method of distribution, has nothing to do with where or how people buy games. It's not about getting people to go online to look for games instead of to stores. The obstacle is the physical package. People still want to have a physical disc or cartridge that they can return, resell, lend to a friend, or light on fire if they so please. They don't want their game to be restricted to just the one console. From this perspective, retail digital sales are virtually identical to eShop sales. What's impressive is that so many people accepted the trade-off of not owning a physical copy of the game, but always being able to play it no matter what cartridge is in the system. And that attitude makes perfect sense for a game like Animal Crossing.

No. You seem to have forgotten your original statement, so here it is again:

The 200k digital is way too high for a Nintendo console, but it turns out they were selling download codes in-store.

The 200k digital is included in the 600k total right? So 400k physical?

This is what I meant by confusing and pointless. Paul already said everything there is to say. After that, it's your problem.

I already know what you're trying to say with all your posts, even though you can't seem to put it into words well enough. I'm not interested.

I

That doesn't matter.

600k people bought the retail version of the game, this means there are now 600k real-life Animal Crossing boxes in people's homes. 200k people downloaded the game. It remains the same wether or not people first bought the download-card or they went to the eShop directly, it does prove people used and found things in the eShop one way or the other. These are all in the reported 200k, all of these units were downloaded over Nintendo's servers making them all digital sales and making the servers definitely capable of handling this much traffic. Iwata makes a clear distinction in what he's saying in the message. I don't see the problem or what's not to understand or whatever's going on.

I'm with the people that find your posts here now to be continually confusing.

Me too. Bashing is not cool, and say demeaning things in various posts about Nintendo neither.

We need moar Zelda, now!

We need moar Unchartedzz!

We need less DLCs.

VGKing said:

I guess in simplest terms, Nintendo's online offerings aren't popular enough to get digital downloads that high.

Oh and BTW, reported.

He's not banned, so I'm just guessing the mods have been wise enough not to take you seriously. Serves you right.

It's because the 3DS doesn't have an ethernet port, isn't it...
