Happy to see this. Nintendo's other big DS franchises (Brain Age, Nintendogs etc) haven't had huge sales success. I was getting a little worried.

But aren't the digital sales inflated from the fact that the game was undershipped? I mean I think the breakdown between retail/download would have been bigger had it not been undershipped. It would still have sold as much just more retail and less digital.

Maybe. Maybe that was Nintendo's intent -- limit physical distribution to artificially inflate digital sales, to increase their profit margin. Pretty devious of them.

Or maybe they just didn't have a big enough initial shipment? It happens all the time.

I think it's a little bit of both. I think Nintendo wanted to maximize their digital sales to show investors and the press. Nevertheless, I remember reading an article that initially it was only going to ship 200,000 copies to retailers and seing the strong pre-orders at retail, they raised the limit to 500,000. I'm very happy that Nintendo is finally advancing forward in the digital age, and plus they get more profit out of it so its a win win really ;) Imagine when Pokemon 3DS is going to release.... dem digital sale o_O

It's more like retailers determine the size of shipments, not publishers. That's why in Japan you constantly hear of games that receive additional shipments a couple of days after release day, because retailers underestimated demand, but the publisher already has more copies ready to be shipped. You can't order production of additional cartridges, manuals, boxes and ship it all within a couple of days to retailers.


Well what I was getting from the article (http://www.siliconera.com/2012/11/10/animal-crossing-new-leafs-first-shipment-is-500000-copies-in-japan/) is that Nintendo increased shipment based on pre-orders being high :(

This is incredible. With the Japanese population being so tightly packed I think the gamers are going to have an awesome time with the street pass and online capabilities of the title. It should become very popular, which is kinda exactly what this series needed. Its always been one thats very near and dear to me. So go Animal Crossing!!!! I dont think Nintendo realizes what a real potential gem of a series they have
