Yes, Sony needs more of the smaller games, because that's what people buy a dedicated gaming handheld for.

Hmmmm... so they'll just discard "console quality on a handheld" already?  Or do we have an internal rift in terms of what direction they should take with their portable...

Yeah I agree 100% here, while things like the pspminis are cool to be able to get they're never going to be the reason that someone buys a psp or a psvita really are they? Unless you seriously love 100 variations of tower defence games :D The vita does just need some massive AAA games to come out now and right now but to make those type of games takes a fair amount of time and money, I don't picture anyone willing to stake that on the system at the moment unless Sony show they're willing to right now.

What they need to do right now is either get PD working on a Mobile version of GT5 a full fledge gran turismo game, or else just hand Rockstar a big wad of cash and get them working on maybe a hd collection of gta for it.... or zomg... San Andreas Stories, you already have the giant city created just need to make more story based around other characters who were in the background of CJs game, there you go GOTY.

If this momentum doesn't pick up during the holidays, itll be way too behind the 3DS to catch up, and the market perception will make up their mind on the Vita.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

It's already too far behind the 3DS to catch up, so nobody is expecting it or banking on it to do so.

minus the holiday effect, Liberation gave the Vita a ~10k boost.

The PSVita's support most likely will hinge on how many retail chains keep re-ordering stock, Until Than Sony is just going to keep Moving units and keep supporting the best they can. until the stores stop re-ordering the units Sony will keep shipping. Price reduction on the PSVita will be done when Sony feels they can without taking a loss Hit, its about profit, and they already stated it will not be until next year, until they do drop the price. With Yoshida's comments in this Interview i think Sony's Board of directors will not give the go ahead to produce another Dedicated physical control game handheld like the PSVita, as a matter of fact Sony may only go with Xperia Smartphones and Tablets and other hardware made by other companies with PSN and Playstation Mobile support being their only handheld platform from here on out.

that way They still have a Handheld platform in the market , but the touch screen only smartphones and tablets will be their handheld's going forward. 3RD party resources are moving toward that trend anyway.

Even though it may seem crazy, I think Sony should ride out the Vita for another year, but behind the scenes fold the platform and get in touch with Nintendo and see if there isn't an alliance to be had in the long term, whereby they basically shut down their handheld division, but agree to help Nintendo in the future.

Nintendo will need a hardware partner for future portable devices, because no one is going to buy a "Nintendo brand" cell phone or tablet.

Why an alliance? Handheld market in general is in big trouble. Sony may as well hop on the one gravy train that's still going, and they're both Japanese companies so it works from that front too. The DS/3DS brand is in decline too, one that probably isn't going to reverse with more kids getting tablets/smartphones.

35k for Vita in the October NPD is just freaking embarrassing. It's time for Sony to take bold steps IMO if they want any future with portable gaming at all.

Here's how you gonna fix the vita solution n.859

Dragon Quest VIII: the Golden, an improved version of the PS2 game.

Compare the console (and show off its power) to its direct competition that is the 3DS (which is getting a Dragon Quest VII port) instead of comparing it to its big brother the PS3, with Assassin's and CoD games.

Does anyone know if there's demographic data available for the DS/3DS and PSP/Vita?

Anyway, just from using my common sense, Vita has a fundamentally flawed strategy. The "casual" market in general is probably not going to buy a handheld gaming device. If you only need to kill a few minutes, or even an hour, you have way more choices in occupying yourself, than you did a decade or two ago with smart phones. It's not necessarily even a matter of smart phone game apps. Even if you took those away, you have the internet with all of it's content. I mean, think of how much time you can sink with Facebook.

So people that just want to kill time are out, and that shrinks the handheld market a lot.

So you essentially have to focus and go after a very specific market with a high need for a handheld gaming device. The Gameboy's target segment is perfect, since they have a high need for the device (do you guys remember how boring it was to sit in the car or how boring fractions were?) and they probably won't own a smartphone (and still a smartphone isn't an ideal way to kills hours of time, over and over again).

Vita's going after a specific segment too, "hardcore" gamers, but it's just too small. I also just don't find the need as well. Some, if not many, "hardcore" gamers are probably sitting around in their homes a lot. Even if a "hardcore" gamer does step outside of their homes, is it enough to really warrant an expensive handheld device, or can they easily kill that time with a smartphone? And if they just absolutely need to have "next generation" gaming on the go, some of them may have gotten a laptop anyway. When you take away all of these people, from an already small segment, it's just not enough.
