Forums - Sony - Sony admits Vita is selling "below expectations"; possible solutions

Vita is being given a chance. Its been given chance after chance after chance. The best launch lineup ever will make vita soar to record sales and destroy 3ds. Didn't happen. Gravity rush will go to put vita on the map. Didn't happen. Hatsune miko will propel vita to victory in japan. Didn't happen. Killzone is a big series though. That will be the killer app to sell vita. Didn't happen. Little big planet then. Nope. Assassin's creed will be the game to sell it out then. I haven't seen reports of vita sales going up so I can't say but going off this it failed.

At this point third parties should realize what they realized last time. If you are looking for money on handhelds, the place for that is nintendo. But I think it will be quite successful as hardware.

Reports indicate AC:Liberation might've sold close to 100k units. It cant do much of a diference. Reviews have been mixed aswell, but unanimous in how its nowhere near as good as AC3. Of course, such numbers cant have much of an impact on hardware sales. After this we have CoD. If that fails aswell i guess its complete game over for the Vita. If not even the big names sell on it, theres really no hope.

I also believe Sony will be forced to withdraw the Vita because there will be no support for it (i know some here think its ok that SONY is not losing money on the imediate time with it, but it certainly will be a loss of revenue when the PSP completely phases out). A system with only 3 Sony games a year doesnt sounds like an interesting proposition.

I heard a sugestion from someone saying Sony should just bundle the vita has the PS4's "tablet" controller. It would actually be a sound idea, but it would also rise the price of the PS4, wich in turn would lead it to be no more powerful than the Wii U.

100 000? Is that all? Including bundle sales? I cannot believe it would do that badly. I don't think call of duty picking it up would work if that is true. This won't leave a good impression on third parties at all. What hope is there if assassin's creed didn't sell? And that call of duty can't really have a positive influence if it did sell. I think it would convince developers they could throw any shoddy attempt on the system. I know analysts said long ago 3ds only got away with it because of mario. Maybe they were right.

I don't care how powerful ps4 is but I don't think they should do a tablet controller because that will just make them the 'me to' guy. They need to make ps4 stand out more from xbox or wii u.

VicViper lol yep. Meant resistance. Mixed up the two. But hey you got my point ;)

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

they should add (limited) Android support.

AC3 and COD will help boost sales, as will the eventual price drop. All it has to do is secure a Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy remake and Japan will eat it up. The Vita may have had a bad start but it's far from doomed.

Assassin's creed and a price drop are here in europe and it hasn't worked. I can't say if the figures are legit but if assassin's creed was picking it up it would be making headlines like 3ds did.

I'm going to wait and see before I rule out AC as helping or not. And even if it doesn't, COD's a bigger brand, and a proper COD on the go is something we've never seen before. I'm also confident that Monster Hunterwill come to the platform eventually, (And isn't the FFX remake coming?) which could save it in Japan.

Killzone might also shift a lot of systems for Sony fans.

And how big was this European price cut?

Most shops are now offering a maximum of a £50 cut which is good value but people don't seem interested. I don't know what is going on with it. I will stand by what I said from the start. Call of duty will be enough to get it off the ground but there isn't writing on the wall to suggest this is going to be any different then psp.

It confuses me to no end. The psp sold like hot cakes and while a lot started trading them in there were people happy with them. Smart phones aren't helping matters but I doubt the market vita is after is interested in angry birds. The reason it confuses me is how psp can sell so well and this not. I understand console quality handhelds don't fly with a lot of people but the only way this can fail is if over 90% of the western audience didn't like psp. I don't really see that as some kind of conclusion. The vitas to show off in my local shops just sit there while people try the games on consoles but surely there must be some people interested?

Yes, Sony needs more of the smaller games, because that's what people buy a dedicated gaming handheld for.

People don't seem to want PS3 on the go either.

What do people buy a dedicated hand held for? Pokemon of course. But that's a Nitendo property so Sony is poked.

These dumb sony vita articles about selling issues are getting old. Wait until the holidays are over and then discuss this issue. Sony is spending 50 mil on marketing for vita. Wait until january and the hard numbers are in to talk about this subject.

I would guess a lot of people would be discussing the consoles future in the lead up to christmas if they were planning on possibly buying the system over the holiday season for themselves or as a present. Who do you think would buy something without considering or discussing if it will be supported into the next year? If no one was talking about it... I'd worry a lot more.

If I was Sony I'd drop the price, pack in a couple "E" rated games and a memory card. I'd then put out a bunch of ads to appeal to kids. Christmas is coming, kids are a big market, and the whole portable hardcore thing isn't working.

Get the kids and you'll get everyone. Ignore the kids and lose. The hardcore isn't enough anymore. Not sure if hardcore alone was ever enough.

They don't have to be quite so drastic. Either a price cut, or a packed in memory card. Not both. Sony do want to make a little profit on every unit sold. I think a price cut (equal to the cost of a memory card) is more likely to bring in the punters, and some game bundles. That'd ensure a reasonable holiday period and profits.
