Forums - Nintendo - Analysts say 3DS is failing against smarphones, Iwata says Nintendo makes games smartphones can't do

I think the 3DS's sales were just 5.4% below target. That is not really a significant number. If an analyst is considering a product to be failing because of selling 5.4% less than it should, then they are not a very good analyst.

What I dislike about analysts is they often don't seem to understand what they are talking about. It is like when someone tries to discuss ancient Greek history and culture based off of what they saw in 300.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I like how Iwata always sounds like the smartphone argument is bogus. I agree.

Seriously, are these people even looking at sales numbers? And this is even coming from a Japanese analyst, you'd think they be happy. With the 3DS still doing better numbers than DS did at the same time, how can people be this pessimistic? Sure, likely it'll change after we get to the point in time where the DSlite was released, but even then, 3DS is doing very good.

And I won't even get into the FarmVille point.

The DS Lite was released March 2, 2006 in Japan -- exactly 15 months after the original model's debut.

The 3DS is about 20 months old in Japan already. It is outpacing the DS Lite... for now.

Okay, that makes it even better! Nice to hear, than I really don't see what the supposed problem is. I don't think sales are going to nosedive any time soon.

Interesting that there is a mini-headline in the article mentioning Farmville and Cityville, even though Zynga just took a big blow.

I am looking forward to what the same analysts will have to say about the PSV which is poised to show significantly worse results than the 3DS.

The VIta is a younger system than the 3DS, so it only makes sense that it would have sold less. And considering how the Vita has not yet had its first full holiday, it is not fair to judge.

Besides, any comparisons with the 3DS must take the Vita's higher price into account, so that one Vita with a memory card is worth two 3DS's.

In fact, if you subtract Nintendo software from the equation, Vita software is only a quarter of that of the 3DS, despite its much lower install base, proving that Vita owners are more likely to buy third party games.

3DS software will fall behind the DS even in Japan (timed with launch) pretty soon, DS really started to put up some monster numbers about this time.

The bigger problem for Nintendo is software I think. Even in Japan, I saw some write up that showed they've sold maybe about half the amount of software the DS did.

The two Brain Training games alone were huuuuuuge on the DS, so was Nintendogs. Those bubbles have burst for Nintendo and NSMB2 is trending no where close to NSMB1.

I think Nintendo's problem was assuming that NSMB2 would be a huge boon to the 3DS and cause an explosion in sales.  It did, but nowhere to the degree of the original in the long-term as a sustained system-seller.  Even the third Brain Age game has sold barely 100k since the end of July.  People aren't going to buy a $170 or $200 game handheld and spend another $30 on a Brian Age or Art Academy anymore.  Those casual buyers are gone, and have moved entirely to tablets/ smartphones.

NSMB was a sales phenomenon because it caught a giant population of people who haven't played a Mario game since Super Mario World in 1991.  The problem is, Nintendo has turned 'New' into a regular series with very little innovation.  Trying to sell NSMB2 and NSMBU in the same year, and expecting explosive sales, is a mistake.  They need to tap into another market, otherwise the best they can hope for is a relatively low-profit business of catering to the nostalgia of long-time gamers.

Nintendo needs a new Wii, and a new DS.  Not extensions or successors of those systems like they have now, but entirely new ideas that rope non-gamers in because they find it so compelling and fascinating.

It's smartphone legion FUD.  This type of doom is what they're paid to do.

3DS will end this year with 30 milion sales!

How is that bad?

Its good to know Nintendo can fail in competing against something Nintendo never tried to compete against.

If anything its awesome that analysts think Nintendo tries this just shows how much of an impact the 3ds actually made.

this guys are never satisfied with Nintendo

I don't see the point in comparing sales to the phone market when people don't go around buying phones for the games. Also, it will eventually get to the point where the console game will offer something the phone can never do (whether or not it has anything at all to do with power).

Why don't analysts see that 3DS is doing great?! It's selling really well, and I predict it'll sell 120m units before all is said and done - and that analysts will predict the d00m of Nintendo then...

If the 3DS is doing great, someone needs to notify Nintendo, because Iwata does not agree.

It's not doing great by any stretch.

He said games "such as" FarmVille and CityVille!

And Vita means "life."
