Forums - Nintendo - Analysts say 3DS is failing against smarphones, Iwata says Nintendo makes games smartphones can't do

This is the most important and truthful quotation:

“The chances of consumers buying our software would be less and less if what we make isn’t so much different. We have to make games that smartphones or tablets can’t do.” - Satoru Iwata

Iwata's quotation only mentions software, but it applies to hardware as well. I think part of why the PS Vita is underachieving is that it wants to play by the rules of smartphones, tablets, and other similar devices. The 3DS plays by its own rules, for better or worse.

I would like to see some evidence linking the rise of smartphones and tablets with the perceived decline in handheld gaming. Are there any studies out there showing how much of this is correlation and how much is causation?

Smartphones have the same advantage though. Making games super cheap, and having a lot of options. Look at the daily list of games that come out. Then go over to IGN and take a gander at all the strong reviews a lot of these games are getting.

Anyone know how well Angry Birds did on the 3DS? Not too well I think.

Yeah that's an interesting point. The reviews are incredible favorable.

These are all from the last 90 days.

What is going on here? Are there really so many great games for iOS? I don't have an iPad or iPhone, and I haven't played any of these. The World Ends With You for iPad is 7 points higher than the DS original? Are these games really that great? Or are critics judging them based on their novelty? Or maybe they are judged based on a different set of rules compared to games on dedicated gaming platforms? I have no idea.

It's the same as with indie games on any platform. Lower standards are applied when it comes to scoring them.

Yeah, I agree with that.  In fact, a lot of people have weird standards when it comes to reviewing a specific game.  Diablo 3 got a low score due to high standards.  Resident Evil 6 got a low score due to high standards and certain expectations.  A lot of handheld games now are being reviewed at the same standard as console games.  Ports get reviewed on the standard that it should be different than the original, so it gets a lower score than the original.

Like another Mario game?

well, yes, as a matter of fact I would!!!!

People who buy Smartphones and such don't buy them for the games. People who buy a 3DS or Vita obviously buy it for games. so as long as their are gamers, the handheld video game market will never fall. thats my opinion anyway.

Are you implying that game reviewers are generally sheep that rush to like or hate what's trendy?

Yes. Yes, I am.

They are like teenagers who are eager to express their individuality by ironically doing the same as everybody else.

Having spoken to both teenagers and game reviewers, I'm not sure either one is acting ironically...

In any case, I have to wonder if the folks* clamoring for an mobile future know what they're actually in for?

*Folks, for purposes of this post, means human beings, and therefore excludes Apple fanboys.

Why don't analysts see that 3DS is doing GREAT compared to the PS Vita?! It's selling really well, and I predict it'll sell 120m units before all is said and done - and that analysts will predict the d00m of Nintendo then...

If the 3DS is doing great, someone needs to notify Nintendo, because Iwata does not agree.

It's not doing great by any stretch.

Interesting that there is a mini-headline in the article mentioning Farmville and Cityville, even though Zynga just took a big blow.

I am looking forward to what the same analysts will have to say about the PSV which is poised to show significantly worse results than the 3DS.

He said games "such as" FarmVille and CityVille!

And Vita means "life."

fixed....btw Sony really should have changed PSV name to PS Mortius; as the system is proving to be still born since Sony spawnned the thing!!!

Amen.

The market may contract, but it won't go away altogether. At least not any time soon.

Ok, so maybe it's not doing "great", but the fact is is that it's doing really well. As it is right now it's selling on par (or above) the original DS' numbers, so that's not bad. I'm not sure it'll quite reach 30m this year - but it'll hit that number before march next year. Guaranteed.

The system is by no means "failing".

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
