This is the most important and truthful quotation:

“The chances of consumers buying our software would be less and less if what we make isn’t so much different. We have to make games that smartphones or tablets can’t do.” - Satoru Iwata

Iwata's quotation only mentions software, but it applies to hardware as well. I think part of why the PS Vita is underachieving is that it wants to play by the rules of smartphones, tablets, and other similar devices. The 3DS plays by its own rules, for better or worse.

I would like to see some evidence linking the rise of smartphones and tablets with the perceived decline in handheld gaming. Are there any studies out there showing how much of this is correlation and how much is causation?

Smartphones have the same advantage though. Making games super cheap, and having a lot of options. Look at the daily list of games that come out. Then go over to IGN and take a gander at all the strong reviews a lot of these games are getting.

Anyone know how well Angry Birds did on the 3DS? Not too well I think.

Yeah that's an interesting point. The reviews are incredible favorable.

These are all from the last 90 days.

What is going on here? Are there really so many great games for iOS? I don't have an iPad or iPhone, and I haven't played any of these. The World Ends With You for iPad is 7 points higher than the DS original? Are these games really that great? Or are critics judging them based on their novelty? Or maybe they are judged based on a different set of rules compared to games on dedicated gaming platforms? I have no idea.
