Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft calls Xbox subscription service “pivotal” to its business, hints at inclusion with next-gen

So much hating on MS for offering options is retarded. Especially coming from people who bought a $600 console at launch.

If you think this is not for you, don't buy it. Problem solved.

Seriously, does the gaming industry have the foothold that the cellphone industry has in the world?

why is this needed?
Heck, you can finance a freaking vacuum cleaner these days. It is not about the seize of the industry, it is about finding customers that take advantage of these offers.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I really hope this works well for them. If they can use this to push a much more advanced XB3, it is great for all of us. These kinds of payment options are a very comfortable avenue for a large number of consumers. For some reason people don't fear a contract like they do a no interest financing plan.

This!  People finance cars all the time - yet they would most always save money if they paid for it outright.  And some people even lease cars which means they get nothing at the end of the contract.  And people don't scream about that.

Microsoft has enough cash on hand to finance you Xbox all by itself.  The extra cost on Xbox Live is for the financing of the new Console.  I realize some people aren't understanding that.

My only concern is if $14.99 is their new target price fo Xlive.  That would not make me happy. Although, if it included Xbox Music and some Video Streaming it might be worth it - once the economy picks up some more.

I saw more power they can put on the next Console and make it affordable to most gamers (and casuals) the better.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

A Vacuum is a need in the world and financing for a vacuum cleaner, even though possible are mostly being purchased outright because the prices are kept around $200-or less. America's biggest issue right now is the amount of debt people are incurring. Im sure you could at least agree with that. We know the next gen consoles better have a decent price. I work retail while I am in college and I sell choices between financing and buying straight out, I'm just speaking from experience.

The major factor people do not understand nor appreciate is that people finance needs, rather than wants. In this economy its becoming doubly so.

This is just a natural progression of things, when people see how many Xbox next start to be sold because of this type of model,i bet u one of the other competitors will follow suit MARK MY WORDS and a lot of peeps on here will eat CROW.

Go to a store pay 3-4 hundred dollars for a console one time i am sure lot of people will do that but what about the ones who can,t?only 99 dollars down and monthly payments an untapped pool of consumers for consoles.

Here in my country u can take out a console on HIRE PURCHASE,pay 25,30 dollars a month adds maybe 3 or 4 hundred dollars more to the overall price, consoles are hella expensive here.Go Microsoft u trendsetter

I think the problem lies in the mentality of a lot of people and how educated on the subject matter they are, fortunately for coporations, the majority are not smart enough and don't want to just save a little but want instant gratification. Nobody is saying that it will fail mind you, all it takes is a certain % of people and the business will do just fine, but those % of people are the ones fucking the rest of the people over as usual, and that's the reality of the situation. I'm slowly starting to dislike the way MS is doing business. What really is stupid is that they are trying it out in countries that don't need it first and ignoring countries like yours where consoles are "hella" expensive. It would be a shitty ass trend if it becomes a trend, but at least I can retire from gaming that way and save lots of money overall, not that I think it will ever happen to PC gaming.

You do realize PC gaming is still Microsoft?  Cause you need things like DirectX and stuff.

It's a few dollars more over 2 years to get it sooner, rather than have to wait to save up that much money.  I don't think the slightly higher price when they basically finanace and loan it to you is asking much at all.  For financing that's really reasonable and upfront.

This is a rip off. I'm sorry but it's true. $450+ for an Xbox 360 is ridiculous.
Instead of decreasing the price, Microsoft is increasing it.

I pray to god that people are smart enough to do simple math.

All you need to do is provide games for your console and people will buy it. If you are concerned about the install base of your console, decrease the price! This is how this works. Don't fool people into thinking your console is cheaper than the others and trick them into paying monthly fees.

If you dont want to do it that way then dont.

This is great news for those of us that have paid for Xbox Live  ( and helped it flourish into the amazing service it is today ) who would get great benefit by having everything added together.

Next generation I will definately consider Buying an Xbox with lower price and a monthly subscription.

Currently I pay Microsoft 30GBP/year for Live Gold. 89.90 GBP/year for Xbox Music and I will buy movies in HD on Xbox Video as that 1 purchase allows me to watch it on Xbox, Surface and Windows Phone 8 without the need for a 2nd purchase, transfer or codec change.

Wow the thread has been a honey pot, 5 people banned?? Wow.

Tease.

You dont understand the concept of interest do you?

For a low down payment, you have a lower price of entry in exchange for paying more long term. You spend more money yes, but its good for many families who cant pay 100% upfront.

Stop descriminating against the lower class people. This tactic was invented a LOOOONG time ago before MS did this.

you dont take out loans on something that costs a couple houndred dollars. you do that on huge purchases/investments like homes and cars.

Just like any objective observer would say pay day loans are a horrible decision.

Low income families are the last people that should be thinking about utilizing this deal. if they cant afford to pay ~$200 upfront they should absolutely not be doing this deal. it makes zero financial sense. They should be paying bill instead with this money.

is this a great business model for microsoft? Yes. is it a good deal for the most consumers? No. but obviously microsoft is in the business of making money, and that is the only obligation they have, and they do a great job of doing. so, im not going to fault them for making good business decisions.

Cell phones buddy. Its been done with them for far longer and they aint no cars and houses.

The 4gb 360 with kinect is now temporarily $250. 2 Years of Live is $120. Cell phones can cost that much if you dont want data plans.

People want to be entertained, even if it means spending money they dont have. Hey I dont make the rules but I do know that debt levels are high in NA. Not my problem but its a reality. MS is just doing what cell phone companies have been doing since phones can surf the net.

Thats the idea....companies like MS aspire to reach that level.

Staying in the stone age of conventional gaming business isnt getting us anywhere. Gaming has yet to reach the mass market status of the movie and music industry and its things like this that can take us there.
