Forums - Nintendo - Mass Effect 3 Wii U developer: Wii U is a powerful, versatile machine

Hm, the only interesting part of the interview was when he said "hardware upscaled". I remember Reggie specifically saying at E3 2011 that they would not do that with Wii U.

I wonder if Tom Crago misspoke. He is, after all, the CEO, not one of the hands-on devs from Straight Right.

I'm going to assume that he meant to say "software upscaled". Putting the extra expense into hardware upscaling everything doesn't seem like a very 'Nintendo' thing to do.

He was reffering to people who want Wii games to be rendered in 1080, like emulators do. Regular upscaling would be in there.

So Wii U was so powerful. It couldn't get the trilogy port?

No, he was referring to upscaling as a development tool.  What people do on their own TVs is of no concern to them or that interview.

For the Trilogy, it was no doubt an a finalized idea that came after the development of ME3 was well underway.  They couldn't sell both games next to each other on store shelves, obviously.  So the trilogy was scratched altogether, or else not a single person would buy ME3 on Wii U.  That's not even taking into account the loss of sales alone from the trilogy being available on the other platforms prior to Wii U launch.

Ugh. They're pretty much saying that its easy to be lazy with and still get decent results

Your statement is nonsense.

He says that the Wii U is easy to develop for. And that is a very good thing. We heard this from other developers already and it will be secure future third party support.

"it’s straightforward and really just allows developers to get down to the business of making games.”

That lines makes me thing of lazy developement.

Absolutely.  Whenever I hear someone say they're getting down to business, my first thought is that they're acting lazy.

?

I'm obviously referring to the "its straightforward" part. When I think of "straightforward" I think of straigt ports and unoptimized code, like how it turned out that ME3 on the Wii U isn't 1080 even though the console can easily do it.

Well, the dev was obviously referring to the architecture of the system, not the porting process.

"From an architecture standpoint it’s straightforward and really just allows developers to get down to the business of making games.

That's pretty obvious in my book.  But, ok.

It means that the devs don't need to go through a long learning period to get aquainted with the architecture like they needed to do with the PS3, for example.
It's a straighforward setup that allows them to get to the meat of coding games right away. It doesn't imply anything about them being lazy. ¬_¬

So, you'd rather hear him say that Wii U has complicated architecture that's difficult to develop for?  He's essentially saying the exact opposite, which is a good thing.  Their efforts can go directly into the game, rather than jumping through unnecessary development hoops.

I should hope so considering it's an UE3 based game that's being ported from weaker consoles that have only half the RAM. I also expect it to run at 60fps with more advanced anti-aliasing.

that a nice thing to hear, I just hope to be listening to the same things in a couple of years from third parties...

I feel sorry however, because Straight Right seems to be working hard on this game and their unannounced AAA game, when EA comes with the ME Collection... Very stupid move from EA.

I hope Straight Right gives EA the finger after they are done with this project. The comic solution is actually preferable for me because I have played the other games and only want to replicate my shephard quick and dirty but I fully understand that a complete Trilogy would be the better move overall.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.
