Wasn't the Wii considered a stop-gap by many industry anal-ists when it came out? Well, it definitely stopped Nintendo's sales gap with their competitors, that's for sure.

Video game trade site MCV Pacific has posted an interesting opinion piece which speculates that the Wii U is merely a stopgap to lift Nintendo's flagging fortunes following the false start of the 3DS (in the west, at least) and plummeting Wii sales.

What the heck is this 3DS false start I am hearing about?  If the 3DS is now having a false start, does that make the Vita a DOA?

 

To some extent every console is a stopgap to the following generation.

The Wii U is no stop-gap, but instead is a true successor to the Wii. Nintendo has clearly advocated this by detailing and addressing all the failings of the Wii, but also holding on to the Wii's already established name.

The Wii U is no more of a stop-gap for Nintendo than the iPhone 2 was for Apple. It's just that life-cycles for consoles are a bit longer than that for phones.

Wii U is Nintendo's next-gen system. They will keep supporting it for at least 5 years unless it severely underperforms. Even then, I doubt Nintendo would abandon a console so early. Just look at the Gamecube and N64, they kept at it.


I am one of the biggest nintendo fanboys and I completely disagree. I want them to support wii u for as long as it will go. I don't care about power. Dropping the system half way through would lower faith in them if they just drop it for a more powerful system. Wii u is nintendo's next gen system and I am glad for that. At least I can count on this being more reliable due to the processor not overheating.

@ tolu I play wii a lot myself but unfortunately nintendo have said a large fraction of people who play games as a hobby left wii due to either them failing to accept the controls or the massive waits between games.

Hot air. The Wii was Nintendos short lifespan console, it was a quick crash grab gimmick by Nintendo. The Wii U will have the more successful titles with the dedicated audience and will be more well rounded in terms of games. The Wii U might not be NEXT GEN, but it Nintendos version of next gen never had anything to do with graphics.
