Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Kinect: Why it failed to do what it was supposed to do even though it was successful

I think you may have been expecting too much or something different from what MS wants to do with Kinect. I think it did open new market away from the Wii - but it does more things than just that. It opens interactions with computers in a new way.

Kinect is one of the most innovative new branches in teach I have seen in a bout 20 years - not since they mouse has their really been a major successful innovation in a new piece equipment for interaction.

Kinect does not necessarily replace the Wii - as it's not as accurate in this version for pointing. What it does, nothing else can do,- such as some of the Kinect Fun Labs, Kinectimals, or National Geographic Kinect, show you is open Microsoft into some major new way to interact with your TV, gaming and more.

To interact with a computer we have a mouse(including track ball), we have touch, and now with Kinect we get both voice and gesture. We also get a camera - and software that can edit us shrinking in a room, show us setting our chair on fire - or zapping the room with lighting bolts like the Emperor in Star Wars - in real time - without us know any special effect or editing software.

The Wii is cool for some things – and worked better than I expected (remembering le Stick on the 8 bit machines). As I see it Kinect is still in its infancy maybe 16 bit equivalent in consoles. But with the next one I hope we see a few generations leap.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Kinect and PS Move have helped MS and Sony capture casual gamer market sales and slow down the sales momentum of the run away console leader Wii. Motion control is definitely not for everyone it appeals to casual gamers, kids and soccer moms.

Not Hockey Moms?

Kinect is a casual machine first and foremost.

You use it to voice command the marketplace to get what you want fast, you use it to command your media, video chat, now you can use it with Internet explorer. Its a party accessory with games like Dance Central.

Kinect makes using your 360 easier and can give parties a nice twist. Bottom line. Core gamers can do those above functions. But it was never meant for core games.

Its fine with me, because I believe you need casuals to elevate your console to mass market status.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

" Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports were the only two games that have ever been able to make any head way with the device."

If they meant sales, there were a few Kinect games that sold really well. Dance Central, for one.
If they meant gameplay, The Gunstringer, Dance Central, and Child of Eden seem like great games, to me. My opinion, though.

And, if I were willing to take the time, I could find the thread where I said that no Kinect or Move game would EVER sell more than a million units. My argument: Kinect and Move are just accessories. They aren't just competing against other Kinect/Move games. The are competing against the entire Xbox 360/PS3 Library! The same guy that bought a Kinect to play Dance Central also has to choose between Halo Reach.

I don't know who the author is but he is wrong. As a peripheral, Kinect took expectations and blew them away! Look back at your Eyetoys, your Super Scope 6's, your Wii Balance Boards, you Dance Dance Revolution mats, etc. When it comes to peripherals, Kinect sits at the top of the mountain when it comes to support, sales, and impact. Show me the person that thought a peripheral was going to kill the Wii and I'll show you a mad man. The author is just making shit up.

Very well written. You bring up an interesting point at the end because analysts will have you believe wii u is too late because kinect came out. Yet you think the other way around.

Now I am bias here as I've never played it so take this with a grain of salt. I saw the writing on the wall the second they showed natal. If you have Steven Spielberg on stage to hype this up you know where they are going. I never believed for a second they were going to achieve wii status but it surprised me seeing it sell that fast when it first came out.

I do actually see potential in this scan feature. It can be used well for games. If developers can make scanned objects become part of the game I may actually enjoy that feature.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

Damnit yojohn, is this a cry for help? We're here for you!
Just buy steam games and you'll be ok

Lol it was only $21 so I figured why not and so far it's been well worth the money. I'm only using it for Dance Central games and Your shape Fitness Evolved 2012. Pretty fun games (I'm not interested in any other Kinect games because I know they mostly aren't very good).

The doing just about everything by voice command is pretty sweet as well.

I suspect when Kinect 2.0 comes out we'll see what the device can and cannot do. The Xbox 360 and Kinect 1.0 made for a clunky interface because you couldn't use your fingers to 'click'.

Tease.

The Wii was only pleasing a market that bought into its gimmick, once everyone got it and used up the quick novelty they let it collect dust.
