Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Kinect: Why it failed to do what it was supposed to do even though it was successful

People can moan all they want, Kinect works great for a lot of people myself included. I don't care if I can't play "core" games with it because I don't just play "core" games. I could've got the Move or a Wii but the Wii games that interrest me are dancing games... Kinect does them better... on PS3 no Move games interrested me and just like one pointed out, navigating in the menus with Kinect is something else once you're used to it.

I'm also glad MS invested in the technology and hope they release a new more powerful version along the next Xbox because really is a lot of possibilities with this device. If people on forums can't see past their nose then we can't do much for then.

No one is doubting it. Anyone who paid attention knows that kinect tech is gimped by the fact that you cannot control depth. We learned this lesson long ago from the Eyetoy, thats all. If the greatest ambition of the Kinect was to be a Dance Central, creen scroller then so be it, but I doubt thats all Microsoft was banking on. Microsoft sells and with this device put the pressure of god in the devs to make it exactly into what they say it is. Its fine if you like it as a scroller or for dance central,  but thats not all  it was marketed to be, but Microsoft failed at saying it was good for everything including core games. Microsoft has to pay up for the next one because they knew the drawbacks and still sold it like it didnt have any. Best of luck to them next gen.

Why you're still comparing it to Eyetoy is beyond me... anyway, seems like you don't know how it works and what software was built to make it work as it is. But I don't blame anyone, even myself though it could do wonders but was kinda dissapointed with some results but why I and a lot of people were able to understand that devs are mostly the cause for the poor games more than the device while the rest (mostly haters) still brag that nothing good can be done on Kinect.

I swear some will hold grudges forever because their expectations were so high they're like these girls that put their faith in their first love and once the guy is gone they became sour and kept moaning that all guys are the same and bad... lol, chill out guys if you don't like it don't use it or stop searching reasons for games to be bad. I wish MS the best of luck next gen and hope Kinect will be included.

my 2 good friends STAGE and Sales. good stuff guys. keep the facts coming.

move, eyetoy eyecamera, and Kinect eyetoy/camra ripoff, and whtever else you want to call it, all od then failed to live up to thier hype.

wht significant hardcore games were worth the purchase of a Kinect? move had some hardcore games yet only 2 were worth the purhcase. kinect is only good for its multi-media uses.

Wii did motion controls best end of story.

This is exactly what I've been trying to tell him. The Wii had the best showcasing of motion controls the whole gen with some great first party  games and a handful of third party, but my point to him is that the Move had the most concrete potential to make a core title than all of the peripherals even though proper games werent made for it. Microsoft could do really well with the core if they follow Sony and Nintendo with nunchucks that are read by the Kinect. Essentially if they follow Sony's lead but market it big, people will act like its something new to the same effect of the Eyetoy market failure.

Gotta disagree with this, I think Ninty just marketed right, but there motion controls sucked as well. We got alot of shovelware and even those were barely accurate. Then when they did finally release something to make it work, the way it should have done from day 1, that thing got even less support than Move. All three are bad in one form or another

Im not talking about how the Move did, but rather the potential of the tech to make a core game. It was essentially the Wii and Kinect combined, capable (if devs had the time to work on it, especially Ubisoft) of making a game that could spawn a new genre.

Ok. Kinect wasn't good enough for core games on its own. I still stand by that Kinect succeeded in its true purpose, to bring in the casuals and enhance 360 as a media hub.

But now your saying that all though Move was a commercial failure, the tech was the right call (because Sony refused Kinect tech....yet have a patent for similar technology now).

Some Move Exclusive Games (strictly made around Move)

Medievel Moves: Deadmund's Quest - Metacritic 61

Playstation Move Heroes - Metacritic 53

Sorcery - Metacritic 70....just barely making the cut for quality.

You can list Kinect core games metascores, no need as I agree that Kinect wasn't made for the core. These are Sony made core titles. So you cant make excuses that the dev didn't know the hardware. Hardly any Move only game (at least retail) made it above 70 except for Sports Champions and Eye Pet Move Edition.

Whether Sony had the right tech and refused Kinect is irrelevant. Its what you do with it and Sony clearly had no idea how to make a decent Move game. Kinect at least excells at the casual games. Move can't even do those as well either.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I never set my expectations high, but it is good for multimedia use and simple things. I've used the Eyetoy and the Kinect  and to me its just a more powerful version of it that was hyped to be more. Trust me, if it had more potential than you say, Microsoft would've never had it and Sony would be using it by now.

Casual gamers were interested in the wii as it was a new and had the 'cool' factor. Core gamers realised it brought nothing new to the table. Casual gamers don't care about upgrading, but just going from one cool thing to the next, hence the reason both move and kinect never had a chance of being outstanding success stories. However this isn't a problem for MS or Sony as next gen, the casuals will will be on pads and phones, whereas the core gamers will have given up on Nintendo, leaving them without core or casual gamers.

Exactly. The Casual market is an extremely high sales draw with very little longevity in the items sold. Usually they go from one novelty to the next. They will most likely buy the next Kinect as well if there is an upgrade. If this wasn't so Apple would be doomed.

Because Sony always has 1st pick and is a proper judge of product success? lol wake up this aint the PS2 days when Sony had great judgement. Given Move specific games equally bomb review wise (see above post) BOTH casual and core, Id say that Kinect has more potential then Move and Sony have no idea whats good for themselves and others. That theory is way more plausable then yours.

They saw it as no different or ambitious than what they were doing. It just controls multimedia and is more powerful than their last version, thats all and yes Sony was contacted first and turned the prototype down.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-27-sony-why-we-turned-down-kinect-interview

Sony R&D basically confirmed that the Kinect was not capable of various genres much like the Eyetoy wasn't so they moved on,  which is why they focused more on internal innovations based on more intuitive tracking and controlling the 3D space.

I don't see how it failed when what it was brought here for was to bring in casual gamers. Just dance, Kinectimals, Kinect Sports, etc has all done great. This has put microsoft into a great postion because as of right now they are the only one going into next generation that has both casual and hardcore gamers in masses. They just need to not try and force hardcore games into it.

Now Sony Move is a different story, that has been a failure.

I would check the Kinect/360 tie ratio. Only a certain portion of people bought Kinect with the Xbox 360. Others just bought the peripheral who already owned it. Kinect is the major reason the 360 has kept its head above water for two years now, but I still think the bulk of the buyers already had 360's. If the Kinect sold most of the 360's Microsoft would be head and tails ahead of the 360 because they've sold 20 M+ units since Christmas.
