Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Kinect: Why it failed to do what it was supposed to do even though it was successful

I did feel Kinect could do a core game well. But that doesnt mean it was Kinects primary function. Color me hopeful that Kinect could do another core title outside The Gunstringer, no more. I know what Kinect was really made for.

It was perfectly clear, right from the start, that Konect would not be able to run "core titles". The GPU has three shader groups. You must use at least one for the Kinect software and at least one for graphics. So it was perfectly clear that Kinect games will either be

a) Accurate Kinect control with "chldish" graphics (2:1 shader allocation)

b) Inaccurate Kinect control with "medium" graphics (1:2 shader allocation)

Kinect's function was to form a powerful software engineering group (basically buying up companies in 3D research) for the nextgen Kinect (which will be a pure software solution) and catering to the "family user" by 23457 "dancing and jump around games". My prediction: as soon as Kinect2 is out, MS will forget Kinect ever existed.

my 2 good friends STAGE and Sales. good stuff guys. keep the facts coming.

move, eyetoy eyecamera, and Kinect eyetoy/camra ripoff, and whtever else you want to call it, all od then failed to live up to thier hype.

wht significant hardcore games were worth the purchase of a Kinect? move had some hardcore games yet only 2 were worth the purhcase. kinect is only good for its multi-media uses.

Wii did motion controls best end of story.

This is exactly what I've been trying to tell him. The Wii had the best showcasing of motion controls the whole gen with some great first party  games and a handful of third party, but my point to him is that the Move had the most concrete potential to make a core title than all of the peripherals even though proper games werent made for it. Microsoft could do really well with the core if they follow Sony and Nintendo with nunchucks that are read by the Kinect. Essentially if they follow Sony's lead but market it big, people will act like its something new to the same effect of the Eyetoy market failure.

@sales2099

"Anybody who believed MS PR about kinect being for the core need professional help and are extremely gullible. That is PR"

Man you are so full of crap its almost funny. YOU were the one saying that this or that game would shut reviewers up and that Kinect could do core games. Now you wanna backtrack?? LOL. Oh man, you do make some valid points though

Kinect having one or two core titles doesnt change that the mass majority are meant for casuals. Point stands.

Thats not what you were saying when it first came out, my point still stands. if you wanna sit here and act like you weren't buying into the whole "Kinect for core" hype, when it originally came out then thats on you.

You can twist my words but my stance was always that kinect was for casuals first with core being a secondary objective

Proof is in the pudding, "Fable Journeys will shut the critics up" sound familar.  Why say that unless you felt that the Kinect could do a core game? Whether the casuals were the priority (which i agree with) is irrelevant.

I did feel Kinect could do a core game well. But that doesnt mean it was Kinects primary function. Color me hopeful that Kinect could do another core title outside The Gunstringer, no more. I know what Kinect was really made for.

See? Was that so hard to admit? Its ok to be wrong sometimes. Dont know why you keep saying that other stuff, since i never said anything about that and has nothing at all to do with my initial inquiry.

Gotta disagree with this, I think Ninty just marketed right, but there motion controls sucked as well. We got alot of shovelware and even those were barely accurate. Then when they did finally release something to make it work, the way it should have done from day 1, that thing got even less support than Move. All three are bad in one form or another

agreed on all points. Move had the best potential for creating hardcore games. Kinect just wasn't used correctly. hell PSeye wasn't used correctly. both best uses were wht the kinect eventualy became, and that was a head-set/multi meadia device.

srry sales, he's got you there. hey did anybody buy dragonballz for the Kinect? best use ever, for a hardcore game.

Im not talking about how the Move did, but rather the potential of the tech to make a core game. It was essentially the Wii and Kinect combined, capable (if devs had the time to work on it, especially Ubisoft) of making a game that could spawn a new genre.

ah, not sure about that. quantity wise, sure but quality? I dont know. the system is like80 percent shovelware and alot of the good games dont even rely heavily on the motion, IE Mario, DK, etc.
