This thread feels like a roundabout way of dolphin pointing out a problem Wii U will have. That said, almost every console has this problem. Didn't the 360 have to compete with cheaper "core" content available for previous gen consoles, including its predecessor? Did't PS3 have to compete with cheaper "core" content available for previous gen consoles and 360? Aren't the 3DS and Vita RIGHT NOW competing with the cheaper content available for their predecessors? Everyone, including this possibly hypothetical father, won't buy into Wii U immediately. Some people aren't so well-off, and like to wait a few years to buy tech when it's cheaper. This isn't a problem, it's a natural part of launching a new console. If the guy is real, tell him to go ahead and get the Wii. He'll save a lot of money and his daughter will be happy (and probably won't know the difference). |
I said he was my colleague and was quite specific. What would convince you he was real? I work with him, so what can help me prove it to you, anyways why would you think I'm lying? That's kind of insulting and a very bad habit to have, you're not a very sensible poster to tell you honestly.
OT, going through that exercise with him this morning made me realize that the WiiU now must compete with the Wii for the casual audience, something the Wii never had to face.
Even if you want to take the attitude of distrusting users, my point is still valid.
WiiU is expected to have full backward compatibility with the Wii games.

You don't have to convince me, I don't really care whether or not he's real. Since you've pressed the issue, I believe you, but it doesn't change my thoughts on the matter. I'm not trying to insult you or accusing you of lying, the example of your coworker just sounded like the means to an end of starting a discussion about the Wii U.

Not really.
It all depends how deep their pockets go. If they can afford the new system, they be silly not to get the latest and future proof it. No point spending money twice, when you can spend it once upfront.
Only reason they will go for a Wii over a WiiU is if they are poor, muslim, jewish or just plain stingy.
Wii is definitely the console for little girls and first time casuals. The Wii U is a step up.

Or they never owned a Wii.
Then again, I just realized that 96M+ users own a Wii, so this is probably a moot point, and those buying a Wii now will likely buy a U to upgrade in a year or two.

Yeah, I meant exclusives. :3

So he asked me my advice, should I buy the WiiU or get a second hand Wii? His daughter loves games for girls, casual motion games, and apparently there is everything for her liking on the Wii. He will also prefer to save money as he doesn't have much money to spare atm. So at first I told him the WiiU was future ready and has some casual games, and is a much better multimedia device than the Wii, and also has a great online community system. Ultimately it boiled down to the games, and the Wii had everything he needed. Do you believe the WiiU will suffer for lack of casual games atm, or will people want to upgrade regardless? |
I think this speaks to a scenario Nintendo actually wants.
In its first-quarter report this year, Nintendo predicted it would ship 10.5 million Wii U and Wii consoles by March 2013. I think they expect to sell a healthy amount of Wii U systems, but also continue to sell the Wii to people just like your coworker who see no immediate need to upgrade.

you are compraing a several year old console with a vast library of games, to one that is about to launch. If you dont care about the latest games, then the old and cheaper system is always a better choice.
