This is what you get when you have bureaucrats deciding what a "healthy" meal is ...

Someone who actually had a clue what they were doing would have taken kids 10 (or 20) favorite foods and modified them so that they were healthier. It is far easier to get a kid to eat a healthy pizza or taco than it is to get them to eat hummus or bean salad.

That's a fair point.

Some people in this thread want to entrust decisions on healthy eating to the people who declared pizza a vegetable.

You mean Republican congressmen who passed legistlation under the influence of the food industry?

I mean Congress.

Have you ever known me to be a Republican, Richard? I'm libertarian, and that means I dislike them as much as I do the Democrats.

People are not used to eating vegetables at home? So many people that it actually makes the news, and they can't even eat it if nothing else is availible?

No wonder america has an obesity problem.

How does it work in american schools, do they pay for the food or is it free?

Some schools end up providing meals for kids, subsidized with federal tax dollars to keep costs down.  In others, the cafeterias actually bring in commercial fast food, under the argument it is the only thing kids will eat:

http://www.education.com/magazine/article/fast-food-school-cafeterias/

And they also likely make some money off serving such food.

And what you stated is part of the initiative Michelle Obama is trying to help counter.  Get kids to exercise more and also eat healthier.  So it starts with the cafeterias in school, which is what TownHall.com is all irate about.

I see.

To me is seems really obvious that the schools that make the food (or buy food) should have regulations on what they can serve. Saying that kids have a right to choose just seems like a fallacy, since they aren't choosing the unhealthy food either, even if they prefer it.

Bold part almost made me drop my jaw. That argument could never be made where I live, because people are used to school food sucking (as in the taste, not the nutrition), and just eat it anyway because they're hungry. That just seems like overly spoiled kids to me.

You know what the cause of obesity is in america? Being a lazy ass and over eating. I'm sorry but if you have a disease that causes obesity I understand but most people that are over-weight are just lazy and eat to much. Some people want to make excuses but I work a full--time job, full-time college student, have a social life, play games and sports, yet I can still workout out 3-6 times a week. Plus I eat correctly so in my opinion there is no excuse for being a big blob on a couch.

Nobody's denying that.

We are denying that it's any of the government's business how healthily a person chooses to live.

But the government is enforcing unhealthy food.

You either serve healthy food and let the haters deal with it, or you serve unhealthy food and doom people to future heart attacks. Or you stop providing food and just make everyone bring from home.

I've never been to an American high school, but the impression I get from the article is quite a simple one. The food organisation is attempting to force the teenagers to eat food they don't like but they're trying to do so because its healthier for them.

The best example is the Black Bean salad, I would never even touch that food and no one I know would either (and I'm 20!), that simply isn't the right food for the right age, they need to make food which is healthy and at the same time familiar to children. The solution is simple, make their favourite foods with healthy ingredients and prepare it well. Kids like fish fingers, no problem, its really easy to make healthy fish fingers, same goes for burgers, pizza, the lot!

(Of course, this won't work alone. I am aware of the disaster later on when children realise that the healthy food that the cafeteria serves is not the same as some trashy fast food corner shop, but I'm sure they can fit that into the school curriculum :P)

healthy food is a conspiracy cooked up by the Muslim-triangle-communist collective.

They are not just going to start eating foreign food to them and things that they do not like. Kids will just opt for the next best thing. Maybe Portion control would be a better option? If a kid starves they will just have mommy or daddy buy them Burger king everyday. Unless you live in New York you can even get it with a extra large soft drink.

Maybe they should just think about making their junk food ( pizza, burgers, etc.) healthier!

If they made pizza's and burger's themselves, it would already be healthier. Less salt, fat or any other shit you get in processed foods. and it tastes better as well. I know as my mum makes nearly every meal from scratch, we rarely have take aways or ready meals. Hell, even ice cream tastes miles better if you make it yourself and it's healthier

I was going to go on with a joke about having the kids make their own meals, work on a farm, etc...   However, I believe home economics should be taught to younger kids.  It wasn't offered till I was in middle school and usually the guys just take shop.  I am pretty sure we were forced into at least one class of home economics that we couldn't substitute shop with.  From what I remember though I don't believe they focused on teaching us how to cook healthy meals.  It was a cake here and something else there...  Not sure why home economics, gym, and health class can't fight childhood obesity.  I blame the parents.

The education needs to change, People should have to do both. In my country, you have to. One year, my class did Textiles (sewing machines) for 3 months or so, then 3 months of cooking and then wood/ metal work. It's stupid that you had a choice. Cooking is an important life skill. But, it's generally the lifestyle choice and there attitude's to food, which is why I think many are fat.

Depends on your families income. If you are a low income family, breakfast and lunch is free. If you don't meet whatever the guideline is for low income your family can pay for school lunches (Not sure about now, but when I was in school in the late80s-90s it was about $2 per lunch, also not sure if it is different from state to state). You could also choose to bring your own lunch instead, which I did until I was in 4th grade.

School lunches sucked until I was in Jr. High. We almost never got fresh veggies. For our fruit/veggie we would usually get one of the following: Dried Figs, canned corn, canned green beans, canned peas, tator tots, mashed potatoes. Then for the main course we would get chicken nuggets, rubbery pizza, cold gross spaghetti, hard grilled cheese sandwiches, a hamburger, weenier wrap, or chefs choice (Usually something that was left over). You didn't get a choice, they had one set a day. Your only choice was your drink which was Milk, Chocolate Milk, Apple Juice, or Orange Juice. The Juices were only meant for the kids that were lactose intolerant.

Later when I got to junior high we had choices for our main course which were much better (tasting not healthier). We also had a vendor in the cafeteria that sold Cinnamon rolls, eclairs, Dominoes Pizza, instant ramen and other junk food. We also had Pepsi vending machines.

There wasn't really a healthy food choice for kids unless they brought it from home. And most school food already tasted bad, I starved myself on Pizza day and spaghetti day because it was so hard to eat, so I just started throwing it away. I am all for there being healthier food served in schools, if parents want to have their kids eat junk food, they can pack a lunch.
