Wouldn't surprise me. Even the Nes and Snes had mysterious expansion slots. Doesn't hurt to think ahead--even if they don't get officially used.

It's definitely for the battery slot.
Go check your Wii to see one. It's on the bottom.

Gotcha. Neat. Do the 360 and PS3 have this too? |
Yes, as do phones and tablets (separate batteries for their clocks). The original Xbox didn't have one (I believe), which was why it often asked you to set the time when you plugged it in after being unplugged for a while.
I remember when I belonged to a Nintendo Myspace group when I still had social media accounts and they were speculating about the mystery slot for the Wii on the front before it was released. I believe 20-30% of the members thought that it was for holographic capabilities... Turns out it was for the SD card slot and sync button.

You're talking about that gamecube pic, right?
I agree.

Yeah, the craziness!
There were some serious rumors about the controller being able to do holograms as well and Nintendo teaming up with NASA do do some out-of-this-world stuff (and Nintendo ON...), you remember these as well?
Probably nothing, but it looks like more recent Wii U models have two screws/slots on that side now:

Might remember something about NASA. There were a lot of rumours right up to about the launch. I just hope the Wii U frenzy is about on par with the Wii. I am a little out of the loop so I am not sure how the frenzy is going. I believe that the general public is interested but not perhaps as much as with the Wii.
