Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Has A Mystery Port/Slot?

Kinda noticed this, on the right side of the Wii U there appears to be a slot/port towards the bottom left end:

It's visible for a split second in the Kotaku hands on video too at 40 seconds in:

Very reminscent of the GameCube Expansion Ports on the bottom right side of that machine:

I'm curious if anyone has a better shot of the side or bottom of the Wii U. Perhaps this slot/port does something.

I see a screw so I'm guessing it's not an expansion port.

Maybe that's a demo unit and that can be opened up to attach a corded GamePad.

Here's a pic I grabbed from the video.

Another pic, again there it is on the lower left side of the console. Appears to be a small indent/(screw?) and it appears to extend to the bottom side of the console, much like the GameCube Expansion Slots:

Hah, nope.

There goes the battery for keeping the date and hour. Just like in the Wii.

i dont know
but it looks damn sexy

Anything with a built-in clock has a battery for it.  Otherwise it wouldn't be able to keep track of the time while the system was turned off.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

You are absolutely correct.

I completely forgot they had that and I've taken 2 of them apart a few years ago.

Gotcha. Neat. Do the 360 and PS3 have this too?

Funny related fact: Nintendo consoles before the Wii used to feature a "High Speed Port" (sounds like a slot for a modem at first but the Gamecube had one as well, in addition to its actual modem slot) - but not one of them actually got an expansion you could put in there. Even the N64 had one (on the bottom side) which was odd considering it also had a memory expansion slot.

I remember discussing the Gamecube port with my friends, we were so damn sure it would be used for a "graphics expansion pack" haha

Anyone in here who knows more about this?

Edit: Apparently the Gamecube slot was used for the Gameboy Player. So I'm talking trash haha (though "Serial Slot 2" was never used I think)

Edit 2: The N64 one was used for the 64DD, while the NES and SNES ones were used for the Satellaviews and possible CD-Rom expansions. You always learn something new! But damn it was way cooler speculating about these mysterious things...

OT: If there's a screw we are not supposed to open it so yeah - no expansion slot for the Wii U.
