Forums - Nintendo - Wii U won’t make Achievements Mandatory for all games.

I like achievements, but it doesn't really affect what I buy. I can't wait to get my Wii U. I need my Pikminz.

Clarified the title. Too much of the thread predicated upon a misunderstanding.

I really don't understand the negative reaction achievements/trophies get from some people. Perhaps, it is because a feature that both ps3/360 (and their successors will likely use) have that the Wii U will not have which, no matter how you slice it, takes away from the value of the product.

You can certainly argue that it is pointless, and it is something that you will never use, but that does not change the fact that there are plenty of gamers that care about it enough to the point where they will wait on a purchase of the system because of it. It comes down to a simple rule that less features = less overall value of a product in a general sense.

Substitute achievements with anything else ... let's take Netflix as an example. I don't use Netflix, and I don't care to ever use it, but if a system does not support it then it will lose customers who love that feature. Even though I don't use Netflix, and I have my own biased/elitist feelings against it (prefer to own physical blurays and to see films in theaters) I can understand why others would see the service as valuable, and I would think it would be a strike against a system (in a general sense) if it did not include access to that feature.

When you think about it, achievements have been a part of gaming since long before the Xbox 360. I can still remember the pride and enjoyment derived from getting a high score on an arcade cabinet and attaching my initials to it. Even Nintendo has embraced "achievements" for certain games like Zelda which has always had a collectible component to go after. It is not about epeen or anything so immature it is simply another way to enjoy gaming (a kind of meta-game that makes gaming experiences more pragmatic and connected then they otherwise would be). All gamers are asking for is a unified system where one can see a quick list of your accomplishments and compare those with friends.

I don't see the harm in this ... especially since multiplats will have lists anyways thanks to 360/ps3. Not including achievements and a basic system to gather and report them back to the player just sounds like laziness to me ... if it is so taxing for Nintendo to implement this then just crowdsource the process of making a list of achievements for each game (maybe that could be a way to make Nintendo's achievement system unique).

It is also foolish as this will most certaintly result in lost sales (most likely am going to cancel my preorder and just wait until a nice bundle comes out like I did for the Wii).

It will have achievements... just not obligatory ones.

Again, not a big deal. If it turns out to be they'll just add the achievements. 3rd parties most likely will have them, since they're already made. I understand you a bit, but cancel a pre-order because of this is really astonishing to me, a seriously case of overeaction

Over reaction is an understatement. Probably worst than the Bayonetta 2 reaction..

Nowe imagine if the headlien this morning read Nintendo purchased Killer Instint Trademark instead of Microsoft Renewed it.

There be people moaning about that because it was going to a Nintendo platform, when infact most probably never herd or played the game (unless there in their 20s or older).

well I think depending on the game and setup..shooters can gain from it too. But yea it's mainly racers. My issue is I don't see what possible reason ninty would have had to do this. Not like this is gonna save them money or anything. I mean imagine the upcoming NFS Most wanted on the wiiu...not gonna be fun playing on the tablet. So hopefully the pro controller info is correct. Maybe project cars is also optimized for the pro controller?

You've been saying great things about NFS Vita.

Ask yourself if Vita's shoulder buttons are analog.

yeah who likes to do homework while they are having fun?

Unlike PS360, I hope Wii U will give you the option to erase achievements. I'm ashamed of the fact that I've played games like DOA 4 and Soul Calibur IV, and even more ashamed that my Xbox Live friends can see that I've played these games. On another note, I will be VERY pissed off if Mario, Metroid, and Zelda games don't have achievements.

I really don't see the problem here, all third parties will use this since there is still the option and it will probably be the same as the 360 and PS3, but it really all depends to the developer which is very nice imo.

Too bad. Achievements are fun as fuck.

You do know that they can still be implemented, right?

If Nintendo makes an unified API for that, they can. If there isn't an API, they can't do it. But the article is a bit confusing... I think they meant that they will have a trophy system (with an API), but it won't be mandatory to use it in games, or something like that. Anyway, we'll know for sure in November.

Aww man, no more renting shitty games like Avatar the Last Airbender to boost my achievement totals.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

? are you actually comparing a racer on a handheld to wiiu? LOL man the wiiu console has hit a new low then. Obviously a handhelds input methods will be limited for racers and will be designed as such. As it has always been it's much easier to control games like NFS on a home console controller (well not like ninty consoled have had a decent non MK racer in a long time or anything..so I guess you won't know this)

seriously..stop blindly defending every single thing about Nintendo. I have complimented wiiu when it's due and called it out when it's appropriate as well. Lack of analog triggers is a huge no no for a console racer. It's kinda sad you are even defending such a thing.
