If iOS is better than Android, and the vast majority of people would agree, why do more people buy Android based devices than iOS devices?

I would personally place a bet that the vast majority of users only use a very shallow subset of the functions of either OS, and don't see any significant difference between the two.

People like Apple products because they're trendy and have good marketing; the technology is meaningless to most people. You could give the average Apple fan the newest Android phone, claim that it is a new Apple phone, and they wouldn't know the difference.

Anyway $500 iOS sells way way way way way more than $500 Android (iPhone 5 will crush Galasy SIII in one week).

The Galaxy SIII has already sold 20 million units and Samsung expects it to sell another 10 million by the end of the year ... I highly doubt that the iPhone 5 will outsell it for some time.

As for the price, the vast majority of iPhones are sold on 3 year contracts at a price dramatically below its MSRP; and the cheaper android phones are usually bought by people who don't want contracts. On the whole if someone thought the iPhone was dramatically better than the Android phone they were buying they could easily pick up the iPhone for a similar price. Most people don't because they either prefer not having a contract or think the Android phone is just as good or better than the iPhone.

I agree that samsung galaxy S III will continue to sell well for some time and the rest of the point. But where exactly do 3 year contracts happen? I have only seen 2 year contracts. 3 years is just stupid for a phone, look how much better they are now, then were 3 years ago. a major improvement in capabilities of mobile phones

Give three weeks for iPhone 5... after that came here and show me the numbers.

1) Doesn't matter, if iOS was so unquestionably better to the vast majority of people than the number of alternatives wouldn't matter. It is because the average user doesn't see much of a difference and one of the Android phones better meets their immediate needs that Android is more popular.

2) Using more functions does not mean that they use more than the shallow capabilities of their device.

3) Windows is pretty iconic but I have seen people skin Ubuntu to look similar to Windows and the vast majority of users couldn't tell the difference. The average iPhone use would think (when using Android) "oh, Apple changed the icons". If you didn't realize it, one of the reasons Apple sued Samsung over the look and feel is because if someone copies Apple's look and feel with Android the typcial user couldn't tell a difference between the phones.
