Forums - PC - Project Eternity kickstarter (Obsidian, $1.1 million goal, everything you want in an RPG)

okr said:
It's currentIy at around 740.000, which means they'll already meet their initial goal of 1.1 million after 2 days,

According to Kicktraq Project Eternity is currently trending towards 12 million:

It most probably won't reach that number as growth rate usually slows down after a few days, but I think it's already decided that this project will set a new KS record for games.

It all depends on on their stretch goals and how much long term media coverage it gets.

Wow, Obsidian on Kickstarter.

A huge project, I predict it will pledge $5 million.

Now if the ex-Ensemble guys would announce a spiritual sequel to Age of Empires II we would see +$10 million.

Obsidian ? Wasted money IMO. When was the last time they made a new IP that was actually a great ? Oh right... never. Or if you count Black Isle Studios, 12 years ago.

They've laid the blame at publishers and I can see how that could happen. Publishers tend to meddle. Besides, they want to create an old school game that none of the major publishers would be willing to back and that's more in the style of the old games they made as Black Isle.

maybe investors only give them money if they can find minimum 1 million anywhere else which is kickstarter in this case?

like "we as investors only take this risk if you bring in minimum 1/3 of the needed 3 million" or so...

btw they say on the kickstarter page that dozens of people will work on the game

OK it's that then.

Don't forget that they'll likely have another team working on games for publishers (like the South Park game). They'll likely use some of that money to re-invest into this project.

Can I set up a kickstarter to redevelop your taste in games? I'll include a Halo t-shirt for $10 backers if you want in

I said new IP. Alpha Protocol is in no way a great game. Even "good" is highly debatable. Icewind Dale is their 2nd youngest IP and that was 12 years ago.

I thought so too. Story was good, but the gameplay was below average and even though it claimed to be an RPG it had only very few RPG elements and many of them were useless.

Yes, but I wonder why you think the same will happen when they actually want to do an oldschool hardcore RPG, like Icewind Dale and Planescape? That's what they do best, and they're not limited by a publisher who wants 'modernizations'.

The question is how many employees are still left from those times. Because in recent times all they did was building a sequel upon an existing and very intact IP where they could copy almost all gameplay elements and just add a new story. And while these sequels were good, they never exceeded their predecessors in quality.

Btw. I like how their world map basically looks like Europe.
