I would say it's a combination of two things:

1) People/the media enjoy criticizing Nintendo more since they stand on higher ground following this generation.

2) It's pretty damn obvious that it can't.

Neither of those

Both.

I'll repeat myself:

"That's not what is going on. Everyone knows Wii U can do 1080p...the question is if the games will run at that resolution because so far we've seen very few that appear to do so. PS4 would not run games at 4k."

Supporting 4k resolution for movies and pictures is not that hard to do. For games however, you'd need extraordinary power.

But that's what the average person/consumer/fan(boy) thinks, that the games will run at 4k resolution, after 1 week or so of senseless efforts we finaly found a new reason to fight, please let us fight to the death, or until a new reason appears on the horizon.

I see another 5 years of HD ready style confusion coming with this ambiguous 4K usage.
I recently put it all together

1080p = 1920x1080
2160p = 3840x2160 QFHD (quad full high definition) or UHDTV1
4320p = 7680x4320 8K UHDTV or UHDTV2 (ultra high definition TV)

2K = 2048x1080 used in your local digital cinema
4K = 4096x2160 for consumer electronics
Digital cinema 4K = 4096x1714 (2.39:1) or 3996x2160 (1.85:1)
Academy 4K = 3656x2664 (1.37:1)
Full aperture 4K = 4096x3112 (1.32:1)
8K = 7680x4320 aka super hi-vision

No clue what actual resolution ps4's 4K will be. so called 4K tv's are actually 3840x2160, but sony's 4K projector is 4096x2160

Yea it's pretty stupid really.

QFHD seems to be the standard for TVs, 4096x2160 for projectors. The content is all being shot on 4096 × 2160/4096 × 2304 cameras.

It's a real mess.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

pointless either way as 90% of people are not just going to go out and buy NEW models of TVs at rediculous prices because it can do 4K res.

Most people here in the last year or two have just purchased a HDTV. They will not be upgrading for a long time unless it is cheap to do so.

No doubt Sony's platform(s) could perform/output 4K, but the more important question is if the market is ready for it.

Well I do not think it would be out of the ordinary for 4K support to come at some degree for the PS4 (though I doubt there will be native 4K support). It is important to note that a switch to 4K would cause an icrease in game developement costs and perhaps on game prices (something which occured during the HD switch). Furthermore, high-end graphic cards are only beginning to support 4k (although specialized graphic cards have been supporting it for video playback for a while) and the display technology is still too expensive. So can Sony work 4K into the PS4? I think they can, but it will be all around expensive. Is it worth doing it? No, because it is too early, and I do not think Sony in the state that it is right now should take such a gamble.

As far as Nintendo getting criticized for Wii U's ability to do 1080P, I think that people are just skeptical the Wii U is the first system to do HD graphics (something Nintendo did not care to do in the past), and there was a little miscommunication at E3. It appears that Nintendo's own games (like NSMBU and Pikmin 3) were running at 720P, whereas third-party games (like Batman Arkham City and Assassins Creed III) were running in 1080P.

Damn, 1080p isn't even the standard for HDTV broadcasts and home console games yet and already people are talking about 4k lol.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

We're still about 2 years away from the ps4. How many people were ready to buy a 1080p tv in 2004, 2 years before the ps3 release? HD ready and 720p were the standard back then. In another 6-8 years 4K tv's could very well be affordable.

It's not pointless, the ps4 will still be available to buy in 10 years time. Why not future proof it.

Well 4K is incredibly unlikely for games anyway. Don't know if anyone actually expects 4k resolution for games. Unlike 1080p where devs are still struggling with it, but should be making progress this coming gen since 1080p TVs have been around for a while now and many people should own one.

Devs still struggle with 1080p and will continues to struggle with it into the next gen because they all want to shove in as many fancy effects as possible and have HDR, AA and next gen tesselation and particles effects will likely be the big thing they'll push.

So even next gen we may not see many 1080p games on consoles as they'll look better with more effects at 720p.

Firstly, welcome to VGChartz!

Secondly, I doubt many games will run at 4K resolution on the PS4. It'll be a similar situation to PS3's 1080p support where only the simplest games support native 1080p resolution (like Wipeout HD). The 4K support is almost certainly going to be utilised for playback and to help push Sony's own 4K TVs. LG, Samsung and Panasonic are also looking to bring out TVs capable of 4K in the not to distant future and some of Sony's Blu-Ray players already support this. It really is a no brainer for them to put this feature in even if games aren't ready to take advantage of it.

I doubt we'll see too many 1080p (let alone 4K) games next gen as I think they'll just increase the number of effects and physics at 720p to get an impressive looking game.

Lastly, whilst WiiU should be more than capable of running current gen games (like Arkham City and ACIII) at 1080p, we've yet to see evidence of it. The developer comments haven't been 100% in support of 1080p, and Nintendo's own games running at 720p have added to the confusion. I think someone at Nintendo's marketing/PR department needs to look at this and come out with a clear-cut statement to avoid the potential negative publicity from the confusion.

Meanwhile, Nintendo getting hammered for a mere 1080P even after Reggie claimed so at the last E3.

What's going on?

gratz on the hit and run thread to incite trolling.  bravo.
